Day 15: Where things are

在 is both a verb and a preposition · ★ 在 goes BEFORE the verb · position words · 有 vs 在 · 30 min

在 zài does two jobs, and separating them is today's whole lesson.

我在北京。 — I am in Beijing. (在 is the verb) 我在北京工作。 — I work in Beijing. (在 is a preposition, and 工作 is the verb)

⚠️ ★ And the place phrase comes BEFORE the main verb, exactly like the time phrase on Day 9. 我在北京工作, never 我工作在北京 — which is what every English speaker says for the first month.

1. ★ 在 as a verb — "to be at"

### Subject + 在 + place. No other verb needed.
我在北京。I'm in Beijing
他在家。He's at home
书在桌子上。The book is on the table
你在哪儿?Where are you?
老师不在。★ The teacher isn't in

⚠️ No 是. 我是在北京 ❌ — 在 is already the verb. (Day 5's rule again: 是 only joins nouns.)

不在 on its own means "not here / not in" — what you say when someone asks for a person who has stepped out.

2. ★★ 在 as a preposition — and it goes first

### Subject + 在 + PLACE + VERB
我在北京工作。我工作在北京
我在家吃饭。我吃饭在家
他在学校学中文。他学中文在学校
我们在这儿等。我们等在这儿

English puts the place at the end. Chinese puts it before the verb, and there is no flexibility. This is the same slot the time phrase takes, and the two combine in a fixed order:

### ★ Subject → TIME → PLACE → VERB
我明天在家工作。 — I'm working at home tomorrow.他每天在咖啡店学中文。 — He studies Chinese at the café every day.

⚠️ Time before place, always. 我在家明天工作This ordering is the backbone of Chinese word order, and Day 22 completes it.

3. ★ Position words go AFTER the noun

### [noun] + [position] + (在 …)
上面 / 上on, above桌子
下面 / 下under桌子
里面 / 里inside
外面 / 外outside
前面in front of银行前面
后面behind学校后面
旁边next to超市旁边
对面opposite车站对面
中间between, in the middle
附近nearby这儿附近
左边 / 右边left / right
书在桌子上。 — The book is on the table.银行在超市旁边。 — The bank is next to the supermarket.车站在学校对面。 — The station is opposite the school.

English puts the relation first — on the table. Chinese puts the thing first — table-on. ⚠️ Same reversal as Korean, and the same instinct as dates and addresses: big container first, detail after.

上 and 里 are usually shortened in common phrases — 桌子, 包 — while 前面, 后面, 旁边 keep the 面.

4. ⚠️★ 有 or 在? — the two "there is"

Both can describe location. They point in opposite directions.

StructureUse
known thing + 在 + placeWhere is the thing?
place + 有 + new thingWhat's there?
书在桌子上。The book is on the table (you know the book)
桌子上有一本书。There's a book on the table (new information)
银行在超市旁边。The bank is next to the supermarket
这儿附近有银行吗?Is there a bank nearby?

This is the same a/the distinction Korean marks with particles and English marks with articles.在 = "the" · 有 = "a". Known thing first with 在; place first with 有.

⚠️ 有 negates with 没有 (Day 10), 在 negates with 不在.

5. Places

jiāhome学校 xuéxiàoschool
公司 gōngsīcompany银行 yínhángbank
超市 chāoshìsupermarket商店 shāngdiànshop
餐厅 / 饭馆restaurant咖啡店café
医院 yīyuànhospital药店 yàodiànpharmacy
车站 chēzhànstation, stop机场 jīchǎngairport
厕所 / 洗手间toilet酒店 / 宾馆hotel
公园 gōngyuánpark图书馆 túshūguǎnlibrary

Chinese names buildings by describing them: 图书 (book-hall), 医 (heal-yard), 超 (super-market), 咖啡 (coffee-shop). ★ 馆, 院, 店, 站 recur constantly — once you know them you can guess new places.

6. Dialogue

在 doing both jobs, side by side: 咖啡店 (verb) vs 这儿学中文 (preposition, before the verb).有 vs 在: 那儿附近一个书店 (new) vs 书店咖啡店后面 (known) — and the second sentence answers the first. Exactly §4.★ And every position word sits after its noun: 学校对面, 银行旁边, 咖啡店后面, 超市里面.
