Day 19: Can and want

会 / 能 / 可以 · ★ 想 vs 要 · ⚠️ 不要 means "don't!" · 30 min

English has one word for can and one for want. Chinese has three and two, and they are not stylistic variants — they mean different things.

我会说中文。 — I can speak Chinese (I learned how). 我今天不能来。 — I can't come today (circumstances). 可以进来吗?May I come in (permission).

And ⚠️ one trap that causes real confusion: 不要 does not mean "don't want" — it means "don't!"

1. ★★ The three "can"

Use
huìlearned skillthings you had to learn — languages, driving, cooking, swimming
néngcapability / circumstancephysically possible, free to, allowed by the situation
可以 kěyǐpermissionmay I, is it allowed
我会说中文。I can speak Chinese (I learned it)
我会开车。I can drive (I have the skill)
我不会做饭。I can't cook
我今天不能来。I can't come today (I'm busy)
我能吃辣。I can eat spicy food (my body can take it)
你能帮我吗?★ Can you help me?
可以进来吗?May I come in?
这儿可以抽烟吗?Can you smoke here?
可以。★ Sure / that's allowed

⚠️ The pairs that show the difference

我不会开车。I don't know how to drive
我不能开车。★ I can't drive right now (no licence with me, I've been drinking)
我不会游泳。I can't swim
我今天不能游泳。I can't swim today

会 is about you; 能 is about the situation; 可以 is about the rules.

⚠️ 能 and 可以 overlap heavily for permission, and both are fine in most requests. 会 never does我会来 means "I will come" (a different use), not "I'm able to".

会 also means "will / likely to": 明天会下雨。 (It'll rain tomorrow.) Recognise this second meaning — it comes back on Day 25.

2. ★★ 想 and 要

xiǎngwould like to, feel likesofter — a wish
yàowant, will, needstronger — a decision
我想去中国。I'd like to go to China
我想喝咖啡。I feel like a coffee
我想想。Let me think (the literal meaning — Day 18)
我要一杯咖啡。I'll have a coffee (ordering — decided)
我要去北京。I'm going to Beijing
你要什么?What do you want?

In a restaurant or shop, 我要 is normal and not rude — it means "I'll have". ⚠️ Said to a person about their time or help, 我要 can sound demanding我想 is safer. 我想问你一个问题 (I'd like to ask you something), not 我要问你.

想 takes only verbs. 要 takes verbs AND nouns: 我要一杯咖啡 ✅ · 我想一杯咖啡 ❌ → 我想喝一杯咖啡

3. ⚠️★ 不要 means "don't!"

### 不要 + verb = a PROHIBITION, not a preference.
不要走!Don't go!
不要说话。Don't talk
不要辣。★ No chilli (Day 12)
不要担心。Don't worry

别 bié is the shorter, more common spoken version: 别走! 别担心!

So how do you say "I don't want"?

我不想去。★ I don't want to go
我不要。I don't want it (refusing an object — fine)
不用了,谢谢。No thanks / no needthe polite refusal

不用了,谢谢 is what you actually say when declining an offer — a bag, more tea, help. It is softer than 不要 and it is what natives use.

4. Where they go, and how they negate

### All of them sit directly BEFORE the main verb.
我 + 会 + 说中文
我 + 今天 + 不能 + 来★ time still comes first (Day 9)
我 + 想 + 去中国

Negatives

不会can't (don't know how)
不能can't (circumstances)
不可以★ not allowed
不想don't want to
不要⚠️ don't!
不用no need to

Questions — A-not-A works on all of them

你会不会说中文?Can you speak Chinese?
你能不能来?Can you come?
可不可以?Is that allowed?
你想不想去?Do you want to go?

可不可以 is one of the most useful four-syllable phrases in the language — it asks permission for anything at all.

5. Dialogue

All three "can" in twelve lines, each doing its own job:说中文 / 做菜 (skill) · 周六不能(circumstance) · 星期天可以 · 可以(permission).想 vs 要:(wish) · 我上班 (fixed) · 我带一瓶酒 (polite).不用,我都有 — the polite "no need". ★ 不要买贵的 — "don't buy", a prohibition.
