Day 12: Ordering in a café
Learn today's one sequence and you can walk into a French café, bakery or restaurant, order, pay and leave entirely on your own. That is the practical goal of Week 2, and the Day 14 role-play test comes straight out of it.
1. ★ Je voudrais — the ordering formula

★ WhyJe voudraisand notJe veux(I want)?Je veux lands like "give me this" — it is what a child says. Je voudrais is the conditional, and it is exactly English "I would like". Always Je voudrais when ordering.⚠️ And do not drop the s'il vous plaît. English can get away with "Can I get a coffee" and a smile. French cannot: without the s'il vous plaît the sentence is an order, not a request. Same for saying Bonjour first (Day 2). Bonjour → Je voudrais → s'il vous plaît is a fixed three-part unit.⚠️ "Can I get a…" translates terribly. Do not say Est-ce que je peux avoir… as your default — it sounds odd. Je voudrais is the neutral, correct form.

⚠️ FAUX AMI: l'addition is the bill, not "the addition". And do not ask for la note in a café — that is a hotel bill.
3. Counting items — the article before the noun

When ordering you use a number + noun, not the partitive (du / de la) from Day 11.Je voudrais du café ("some coffee") is grammatical, but in a café un café is what people actually say.

★ une carafe d'eau (ewn ka-raf DOH, a jug of tap water) is free and you are entitled to it. Ask for it or you will be sold a bottle. ★ ⚠️ The bill never comes unasked. In France, bringing it early would be rushing you out. Sitting there waiting is the classic English-speaker mistake — you have to ask. ★ ⚠️ Service is included (service compris). Rounding up a euro or two is plenty; a 20% tip is an American habit that does not transfer.
