Day 17: Getting around

버스를 타요 · 내리다 · 갈아타다 · (으)로 · taxis and the subway · 25 min

One particle surprise and one new one.

① 타다 (to ride) takes 을/를, where English says "get on" — 버스를 타요. ② (으)로 means toward and by means of버스로 가요 (go by bus), 오른쪽으로 가세요 (go to the right — you met it yesterday).

★ 타다 and 내리다

Particle
타다to get on, to ride을/를
내리다to get off에서
갈아타다to transfer, change
버스를 타요. — I take the bus.지하철을 타요. — I take the subway.여기에서 내려요. — I get off here.시청역에서 내리세요. — Get off at City Hall station.

⚠️ 타다 takes 을/를 even though English uses a preposition. 버스에 타요 is wrong. And 내리다 takes 에서, because getting off is an action that happens at that place — Day 15's rule, still holding.

★ 갈아타다 — the one you need in Seoul

2호선에서 3호선으로 갈아타세요. — Change from line 2 to line 3.어디에서 갈아타요? — Where do I change?

(호선 = subway line. 이호선, 삼호선 — Sino numbers.)

2. ★ (으)로 — by, toward

### Vowel or ㄹ → 로 · Batchim → 으로
Use
by means of버스 가요I go by bus
지하철 가요by subway
택시 가요by taxi
한국어 말해요I speak in Korean
toward오른쪽으로 가세요Go to the right
서울 가요I'm heading to Seoul

⚠️ 로 vs 에 for destination: 서울에 가요 = I go to Seoul (the endpoint). 서울로 가요 = I'm heading toward Seoul (the direction). Both are correct and the difference is small — is the safer default.

걸어서 가요 is the exception for walking — not 발로, but 걸어서 (having walked).

3. The subway

Seoul's subway is the easiest transport system you will ever use — numbered lines, colour-coded, English signage everywhere.

몇 호선이에요?Which line is it?
어디에서 갈아타요?Where do I change?
다음 역이 어디예요?What's the next station?
시청역에서 내려요.I get off at City Hall
몇 번 출구예요?★ Which exit?

몇 번 출구 is genuinely important. Seoul stations have up to fifteen numbered exits and they can be several hundred metres apart. Koreans give directions by exit number강남역 11번 출구에서 만나요 — and it is the normal way to arrange a meeting.

Paying

교통카드 (transit card, T-money) — buy at any convenience store, top it up there too. Tap on and tap off.

4. Buses and taxis

Buses

몇 번 버스예요?Which bus number?
이 버스 강남에 가요?Does this bus go to Gangnam?
어디에서 내려요?Where do I get off?

(버스 numbers use Sino — 이백육 번 버스.)

Taxis

어디로 가세요?Where to? (what the driver asks)
서울역으로 가 주세요.To Seoul Station, please
여기로 가 주세요.★ Here, please (showing a phone screen)
여기에서 세워 주세요.Please stop here
카드 돼요?Can I pay by card?

여기로 가 주세요 while showing a map on your phone is the whole taxi conversation. You do not need to pronounce the address.

Time and distance

얼마나 걸려요?How long does it take?
삼십 분쯤 걸려요.About 30 minutes
얼마나 멀어요?How far is it?
막히나요? / 길이 막혀요.Is there traffic? / There's traffic
