Day 7: Week 1 Review
Seven days ago you could not read a single character. Today you find out what stuck.
Do the tests before you read the summary. A review you read is worth almost nothing; a review that catches you being wrong is worth the whole week.
1. Week 1 on one page
The alphabet (Days 1–2)
Vowels: ㅏ a · ㅓ eo · ㅗ o · ㅜ u · ㅡ eu · ㅣ i — extra stroke = y ⚠️ ㅓ ≠ ㅗ (lips relaxed vs rounded) · ㅡ ≠ ㅜ (lips wide vs round) Consonants: ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅅ ㅇ ㅈ ㅎ — shape = where in the mouth ★ + stroke = aspirated ㅋㅌㅍㅊ · doubled = tense ㄲㄸㅃㅆㅉ — 달 / 탈 / 딸 Blocks: vertical vowel → consonant left · horizontal → consonant on top ㅇ silent at the top, ng at the bottom 7 final sounds: k · n · t · l · m · p · ng — all unreleased Sound rules: ★ 연음 한국어→[한구거] · 비음화 감사합니다→[감사함니다] · 경음화 학교→[학꾜]
Greetings and register (Day 3)
★ 해요체 for everything — polite, warm, never wrong 안녕하세요 — one greeting, all day ★ 안녕히 가세요 (to the one leaving) / 안녕히 계세요 (to the one staying) 감사합니다 · 죄송합니다 · 저기요 ⚠️ 안 가요? → 네 = "correct, I'm not going" — the opposite of English
Sentences (Days 4–6)
★ The verb goes LAST. Always.
이에요 / 예요 — batchim → 이에요, vowel → 예요 · negative ~이/가 아니에요 저는 (humble I) — say it once, then drop it Particles: 이/가 = new / subject · 은/는 = known / topic / contrast ★ 이/가 ≈ "a" · 은/는 ≈ "the" · question words always take 이/가 Verbs: ★ no person endings · stem + 아요 (ㅏ/ㅗ) or 어요 · 하다 → 해요 ★ 하다 = word factory — 공부해요, 일해요, 운동해요 ★ One form, four jobs — 가요. / 가요? / 가요. / 가요! Negation: 안 + verb · 하다 verbs split → 공부 안 해요
The four things English speakers get wrong
- ㅓ and ㅗ merged — they are different words (서울 / 소울)
- Releasing final stops — 밥 ends with the lips shut, no puff
- 저는 in every sentence — say it once
- Answering a negative question the English way — 안 가요? → 네
2. ✍️ Dictation — 15 sentences
Write them in Hangul, without looking. No romanisation.
Scoring
| 14–15 | Your ear is ahead of schedule |
|---|---|
| 11–13 | Normal and healthy |
| 8–10 | Check the type: batchim missing → Day 2 §2 · particles missing → Day 5 |
| under 8 | ★ Redo Day 2 before Day 8. It is an alphabet gap, and it will not fix itself |
⚠️ Diagnose the error type. Writing 옷 as 오 is a batchim problem. Writing 커피 as 커비 is a tense/aspirated problem. Dropping 이/가 is a particle problem. Three different fixes.
3. 🗣 Speaking test — one minute about yourself
Record yourself. One take, no notes, no stopping.
The eight things you must include
- 안녕하세요 + your name (저는 ~예요)
- where you're from (~에서 왔어요 / ~사람이에요)
- your job (~이에요/예요)
- one thing you are not (~이/가 아니에요)
- your age, as the memorised phrase
- two things you do (verbs in 해요체)
- one thing you like (저는 ~이/가 좋아요)
- a closing — 안녕히 계세요 or 가세요, correctly chosen
Model answer (~45 seconds)

Self-scoring (out of 8)
| Check | |
|---|---|
| Verb at the end of every sentence? | ⬜ |
| Did you say 저는 once, not eight times? | ⬜ |
| ㅓ and ㅗ kept apart? | ⬜ |
| Final consonants unreleased? | ⬜ |
| 해요체 throughout — no 다 forms? | ⬜ |
| ~이/가 아니에요 used correctly? | ⬜ |
| At least 45 seconds? | ⬜ |
| Correct goodbye for the situation? | ⬜ |
★ Keep this recording. You re-record the same minute on Day 30.
4. 🎭 Role-play — survive five turns
Open the Role-play mission. Scene: meeting someone at a language exchange in Seoul. Use 해요체. Five exchanges, no English.
- Greet and give your name
- Ask where they're from — answer when asked back
- Ask what they do — answer, and say what you are not
- Say what you study or do every day
- Say what you like — and say goodbye correctly
If you get stuck, these are legal and native:
| 네? | Sorry, what? |
|---|---|
| 다시 말해 주세요. | Please say that again |
| 천천히 말해 주세요. | Please speak slowly |
| 몰라요. | I don't know |
| 한국어 조금 해요. | I only speak a little Korean |
★ Using these is passing, not failing. And say 네 while listening — silence reads as incomprehension.

What week 1 actually gave you
You can read anything. Not understand it — read it, correctly, out loud. That is the wall most learners never get past, and you cleared it in two days.
You can also greet anyone, introduce yourself completely, say what you are and are not, and use verbs in the politeness level adults actually use.
What is still missing: you cannot yet say what you did it to — the object particle is Day 11 — or count anything, or talk about the past. Weeks 2 and 3.
★ The one honest warning before week 2. ⚠️ If your batchim is shaky, fix it today.Every particle you meet from here attaches to a noun and triggers 연음. Day 11 (을/를), Day 15 (에/에서) and Day 26 (past tense) all assume you hear the bottom of the block.Day 2 is the one day in this course you cannot skip.
