Day 2: Pinyin that lies, and tones that move

z/c/s vs zh/ch/sh vs j/q/x · the vowel traps · ★ tone sandhi · 35 min

Pinyin uses Roman letters and means something different by about a third of them. Read it as English and you will mispronounce half of what you say for months.

Then two things happen that are not written down: tones change when they collide (section 4). 你好 is written nǐ hǎo and said ní hǎo, and no textbook prints it that way.

⚠️ This is the day that decides whether you sound like a learner or like someone who read a phrasebook.

1. ★★ The three sibilant series

Nine initials, three groups, and the difference is where your tongue is. English has roughly one of these. Chinese has three, and they distinguish real words.

SeriesTongueLettersExample
flattip at the back of your teethz c szì 字 · cài 菜 · sān 三
retroflextip curled back toward the roofzh ch sh rzhōng 中 · chá 茶 · shì 是 · rén 人
palataltongue forward and flat, lips spreadj q xjiā 家 · qǐng 请 · xiè 谢

What each letter actually is

Not…Actually
c⚠️ not k, not sts — as in cats · cài = "tsai"
znot zdz — as in reads
splain s
zhj as in jump, tongue curled back
chch as in church, tongue curled back
shsh, tongue curled back
r⚠️ not English r★ between r and the s in pleasure, tongue curled
jj, but tongue forward, lips smiling
q⚠️ not k, not kwch, tongue forward, lips smiling
x⚠️ not ks, not zsh, tongue forward, lips smiling
The physical instruction that works:z c s — say "cats", freeze your tongue there.zh ch sh — say the same sounds with your tongue curled back, as if there were a marble under it.j q x — say them again smiling hard, tongue pressed forward and flat.Three positions, same three sounds. Practise moving between them: sān — shān — xiān.

⚠️ j q x only ever appear before i or ü. z c s and zh ch sh never do. So the spelling always tells you which series you are in — you never have to guess.

2. ⚠️ The vowel traps

★ i is three different sounds

AfterSound
j q x, b p m, d t n l★ normal ee — jī, nǐ, dì
z c s⚠️ not ee — a flat buzz with the tongue where the z/c/s was: zì, cì, sì
zh ch sh r⚠️ not ee — the same buzz, tongue curled: zhī, chī, shì, rì
是 shì is not "she". 四 sì is not "see". In both, the i is silent-ish — you just hold the consonant and add a voiced buzz. This one fix changes how you sound more than any other on this page.

The rest

WrittenSaidExample
e (alone)⚠️ uhhē 喝 = "huh"
ü★ lips rounded, tongue says eelǜ 绿
ju qu xu yu⚠️ these u's are all üjū = "jü"
ian⚠️ yen, not yantiān 天 = "tyen"
uiweiduì 对 = "dway"
iuyouliù 六 = "lyou"
unwenlùn = "lwen"
o after b p m fuobō = "bwo"
ongoongzhōng 中

ü is the only genuinely new vowel. Say ee, then freeze your tongue and round your lips. (If you've done French or German: it is French u, German ü.) And note the shortcut: after j q x y it is written as plain u, because those initials can never take a real u — so there is no ambiguity.

3. Aspiration, one more time

Day 1's paper test covers six pairs, not three:

unaspiratedaspirated
bp
dt
gk
zc
zhch
jq

This is why c, ch and q feel so strong — they are the aspirated partners of z, zh and j. Hold the paper up and say all six pairs.

4. ★★ Tone sandhi — the changes nobody writes down

Three rules. They are automatic, they are compulsory, and pinyin does not show them.

① 3rd + 3rd → 2nd + 3rd

Two third tones in a row: the first becomes a 2nd tone.
Written★ Said
nǐ hǎo 你好ní hǎo
wǒ hěn hǎo 我很好wó hén hǎo
kěyǐ 可以kéyǐ
shuǐguǒ 水果shuíguǒ

Two low creaky tones in a row are physically awkward, so the first one lifts. Every Chinese speaker does this without thinking, and if you do not, your 你好 sounds heavy.

② 不 bù → bú before a 4th tone

Written★ Said
bù shì 不是bú shì
bù kèqi 不客气bú kèqi
bù duì 不对bú duì
bù hǎo 不好bù hǎo (unchanged — 3rd tone)

③ 一 yī changes to fit what follows

BeforeBecomesExample
a 4th toneyí ge 一个 · yí cì 一次
a 1st, 2nd or 3rd toneyì tiān 一天 · yì nián 一年 · yì bǎi 一百
counting, or aloneyī, èr, sān

⚠️ ★ Textbooks and dictionaries usually print bù and yī unchanged, so you must apply these yourself. 不是 will be written bù shì and must be said bú shì.

5. Neutral tones

Some syllables lose their tone entirely — light, short, no shape:

māma 妈妈 · bàba 爸爸 · gēge 哥哥reduplicated family words
de 的 · le 了 · ma 吗 · negrammar particles
xièxie 谢谢 · duìbuqǐ 对不起the middle of common phrases
yī ge 一个 · liǎng ge 两个★ the measure word 个

Neutral is not "no tone at all" — it is unstressed and quick, and its pitch depends on what came before. Do not give it a full tone; that is as wrong as giving it the wrong one.

★ *(A note on 儿化 — the -r ending you'll hear in Beijing: 哪儿 nǎr, 一点儿 yìdiǎnr.It is regional, it is common in the north, and southern speakers mostly do not use it.Recognise it; you never have to produce it.)*

6. Read these — every trap is in here

PinyinCharacters★ Watch for
four⚠️ i is a buzz, not "ee"
shìto be⚠️ retroflex + buzz
xièxie 谢谢thanksx = sh, smiling
qǐngpleaseq = ch, smiling
càidish, food⚠️ c = ts
chátearetroflex ch
rénperson⚠️ not an English r
zhōngguó 中国Chinazh retroflex, ong
to drink⚠️ e = "uh"
tiānday, sky⚠️ ian = "yen"
duìcorrectui = "way"
liùsixiu = "you"
womanü

ní hǎo 你好hello★ sandhi ①
bú shì 不是is not★ sandhi ②
yí ge 一个one (of something)★ sandhi ③
