Day 3: Characters

most characters tell you their sound · radicals · stroke order · how many you need · 35 min

The single most useful fact about Chinese characters, and almost nobody tells beginners:

Over 80% of characters are made of two parts — one that hints at the MEANING and one that hints at the SOUND. They are not pictures, and they are not arbitrary.

妈 mā (mother) = (woman — the meaning) + 马 mǎ (horse — the sound). 吗 ma (question particle) = (mouth) + 马 mǎ (the sound).

Once you see this, characters stop being 3,000 unrelated drawings and become a system with about 200 parts.

1. The four kinds

① Pictographs — actual drawings (a few hundred)

rénpersontwo legs walking
shānmountainthree peaks
suna circle with a mark
yuèmoona crescent
treetrunk, branches, roots
shuǐwatera stream
huǒfireflames
kǒumouthan opening
méndoora gate

② Indicatives — abstract marks

一 yī (1) · 二 èr (2) · 三 sān (3) · 上 shàng (up) · 下 xià (down)

③ Compounds — two meanings combined

hǎogood woman + child
míngbright sun + moon
xiūrest person + tree — leaning on a tree
línwoods +
sēnforest木木木
nánmale field + strength

These are genuinely memorable, and they are the ones every beginner book shows you. But they are a small minority — which is why the next group matters more.

2. ★★ ④ Sound-meaning compounds — 80%+ of all characters

### One half says roughly what it MEANS. The other half says roughly how it SOUNDS.
CharacterMeaning partSound partResult
mā mother woman
ma (question) mouthma
mà scold口口 mouths
hé river water
hú lake water
qǐng please speech qīngqǐng
qīng clear water qīngqīng
qíng feeling heart qīngqíng
fàn rice, meal food fǎnfàn

Look at 请 清 情. Same sound part , three different meaning parts, three related sounds — qǐng, qīng, qíng.The character is telling you how to say it.

⚠️ The sound hint is approximate, not exact. It usually gives you the right syllable and often the wrong tone, because the hints were set two thousand years ago and pronunciation drifted. Treat it as a strong clue, never as a guarantee.

What this changes for you: when you meet a new character, do not try to memorise a shape. Split it. Ask which half is the meaning, which is the sound — you will usually be able to guess both, and a guessed character sticks far better than a copied one.

3. Radicals — the ~200 parts

The meaning half is called a radical, and dictionaries are organised by them. These are the ones you will see today and every day:

RadicalFromMeans
water — 河 湖 海 洗
person — 你 他 们 住
speech — 说 请 谢 语
mouth — 吗 呢 吃 喝
woman — 妈 姐 好 她
wood — 林 树 桌
忄 / 心heart, feeling — 情 想 忙
扌 / 手hand — 打 找 拿
sun, time — 明 时 早
food — 饭 饿 馆
plants — 茶 菜 花
movement — 这 那 还 送
metal — 钱 银

茶 chá is 艹 (plant) over 人 (person) over 木 (tree) — a plant, a person, a tree. 菜 cài is 艹 over 采 (pick). ★ Both are food from plants, and both wear the grass radical.

4. Stroke order

Six rules cover almost everything:

1Top → bottom
2Left → right
3Horizontal before vertical (十 = ㇐ then ㇑)
4Outside before inside (月, 同)
5★ Close the box last (国, 回 — the bottom line seals it)
6Centre before sides (小, 水)
Why bother when you will type everything? Three reasons: Handwriting-recognition input (phone, tablet) needs it. It makes characters stick — writing one out five times beats staring at it fifty. It is how you look up a character you cannot type.

5. ⚠️ Honest answers to the three questions you have

"How many do I need?"

~300street signs, menus, basic messages
~1,000★ around 90% of everyday written text
~2,500the official literacy standard
~3,500comfortable adult reading

This course teaches you about 150–200, for recognition. That is a foundation, not literacy — and it is enough to read a menu, a sign and a simple message, which is what thirty days can honestly deliver.

"Do I have to learn to write them?"

No — and be strategic about this. Everyone, including Chinese people, types using pinyin: you type ni hao and pick 你好 from a list. That means recognition is worth far more than production, and native speakers themselves routinely forget how to handwrite characters they read fluently.

Recommended split for these thirty days: recognise 100%, handwrite the 20–30 you like. Writing a few by hand genuinely helps them stick. Writing all of them is a different, much longer project.

"Simplified or traditional?"

Used in
Simplified — this coursemainland China, Singapore
TraditionalTaiwan, Hong Kong, Macau

Many characters are identical in both (人 山 日 月 好 一 二 三). Learn simplified here; traditional is a later, smaller step, not a separate language.

6. Your first twenty

中 + 国 = 中国 Zhōngguó — "middle country" = China.中 + 文 = 中文 — Chinese language. 美 + 国 = 美国 — "beautiful country" = America.英 + 国 = 英国 — Britain. ★ Country names are built from two characters, and 国 is always the second one.

Handwrite the twenty from §6 five times each tonight. Twenty minutes, and it is the single best return on time in this whole week — not because you will handwrite later, but because it is what makes them stick.
⚠️ From tomorrow, every new word comes with its characters. Do not let yourself read only the pinyin — cover it and look at the characters first, every time.
Tomorrow: greetings, 你好 and 您好, and the first thing Chinese people actually ask you.
