Day 22: Word order
Chinese has almost no grammatical endings — so word order carries almost everything. Get the order right and a sentence is correct even with no other markers at all.
Today assembles the pieces you already have into ★ one slot order that covers the vast majority of Chinese sentences, and then adds the two things that break it on purpose: topic-comment and 把.
1. ★★ The master order
### WHO → WHEN → WHERE → HOW → VERB → WHAT
| Who | When | Where | How | Verb | What |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 我 | 明天 | 在家 | 跟朋友 | 吃 | 饭 |
| 他 | 每天 | 在咖啡店 | 用电脑 | 学 | 中文 |
| 我们 | 昨天 | 在学校 | 见 | 老师 |
我明天在家跟朋友吃饭。 — Tomorrow I'm eating at home with friends.他每天在咖啡店用电脑学中文。 — He studies Chinese on his laptop at the café every day.
★ English builds outward from the verb — eating at home with friends tomorrow. ★ Chinese piles everything up in front of the verb and finishes with the object.
⚠️ The three errors, and they are all the same error:
| ❌ | ✅ |
|---|---|
| 我明天吃饭 (time — Day 9) | |
| 我在北京工作 (place — Day 15) | |
| 我坐地铁去学校 (means — Day 17) |
★ Everything that modifies the verb goes BEFORE it. Only the object comes after.
And the modifiers of a NOUN also come first
我的书 · 很好的朋友 · 我买的书 · 桌子上的书
★ Same principle at both levels: the describer goes in front of the described. Chinese is consistently left-branching — and once you feel that, the order stops needing rules.
2. ★★ Topic-comment — the sentence shape English lacks
### Put what you're talking about first, then say something about it.
| Literally | |
|---|---|
| 中国菜我很喜欢。 | Chinese food, I like a lot |
| 这个问题我不知道。 | This question, I don't know |
| 那本书我看过了。 | That book, I've read it |
| 今天天气很好。 | Today, the weather is good |
| 我头疼。 | ★ Me, head hurts |
★ The "topic" does not have to be the subject or the object of anything — it just sets what the sentence is about. English can do this with heavy effort — "As for Chinese food, I like it" — and it sounds marked. In Chinese it is completely ordinary.
★ 我头疼 is the clearest example. It is not "my head hurts" with a possessive; it is literally "me — head hurts." Topic, then comment. Same for 我肚子饿了 (me — stomach hungry).
★ This is why Chinese feels "loose" to English speakers and is not. The topic slot is a real grammatical position, and fronting something into it is how Chinese does emphasis — there is no other way, because there are no stress-based tricks available.
3. ★ 把 — moving the object forward
Sometimes you need to say what happened TO an object — you disposed of it, moved it, finished it. Chinese pulls the object in front of the verb with 把 bǎ.
### Subject + 把 + OBJECT + Verb + (result)
| 我把书放在桌子上。 | I put the book on the table |
|---|---|
| 请把门关上。 | ★ Please close the door |
| 我把钱包丢了。 | I lost my wallet |
| 他把菜吃完了。 | He finished the food |
⚠️ The verb cannot be bare — 把 sentences need something after the verb: a result (完, 好, 上), a place (在桌子上), or 了. 我把书放 ❌
★ You do not have to produce 把 sentences yet — you can usually say the same thing another way. But you must recognise them, because 请把… is how requests are phrased constantly: 请把这个给我 (please give me this).
4. ⚠️ Where the negative and the adverbs go
| 不 / 没 | ★ directly before the verb or the auxiliary |
|---|---|
| 也 / 都 | before the verb (Day 5) |
| 常常 / 一起 / 已经 | before the verb |
| 我明天不去。 | I'm not going tomorrow |
|---|---|
| 我今天不能来。 | ★ 不 goes before the auxiliary, not the main verb |
| 我们都不去。 | ★ none of us are going |
| 我们不都去。 | ★ not all of us are going |
★ 我们都不去 vs 我们不都去 — one character swapped, completely different meanings. The negative applies to whatever follows it.
⚠️ Adverbs never come after the verb, and never at the end. English "I go there often" → 我常常去.
5. Dialogue
★ 我明天在家工作 and 晚上跟朋友一起吃饭 — ★ when → where → how → verb, exactly §1.★ 中国菜我很喜欢 — ★ topic-comment, object fronted.★ 把那本书带给我 and 把它放在包里了 — both 把 sentences, both with something after the verb.★ 桌子上的那本 — the modifier before the noun, as always.
