Day 23: 不 and 没

不 = won't / doesn't · 没 = didn't · 有 always takes 没 · 从来不 vs 从来没 · 25 min

Chinese has two negatives and the split is clean:

### ★ 不 negates the present, the future, and habits. 没 negates the PAST.

我不去。 — I'm not going / I don't go. 我没去。 — ★ I didn't go.

⚠️ And 有 is the one verb that always takes 没, in any tense — you have known this since Day 10, and today it stops being an exception and becomes part of the system.

1. ★★ The core split

NegatesExample
present · future · habitual · willingness我不去。 I'm not going
没(有) méi(yǒu)the past — "it didn't happen"我没去。 I didn't go
我不吃肉。I don't eat meat (habit — I'm vegetarian)
我没吃肉。★ I didn't eat meat (this time)
他不来。He isn't coming
他没来。★ He didn't come
我不喝酒。I don't drink
我没喝酒。I haven't been drinking

The difference is often the difference between an identity and an event. 我不吃肉 tells people you are vegetarian. 我没吃肉 tells them what happened at lunch.

⚠️ This is not a tense system. Chinese has no tenses (Day 1)没 is about whether an event occurred, which is why it also translates the English perfect: 我没看过 = I haven't seen it.

2. ★ Adjectives take 不, almost always

不贵。It's not expensive
不好。Not good
不忙。Not busy
不难。Not hard

Descriptive verbs describe a state, not an event, so they take 不 — even about the past. 昨天不忙 = I wasn't busy yesterday.

⚠️ 没 + adjective is possible but means something specific: "hasn't become ~ yet." 天还没黑。 (It hasn't got dark yet.) 饭还没好。 (The food isn't ready yet.)Recognise it; you rarely need to build it.

3. ⚠️★ 有 always takes 没

我没有钱。我不有钱
我没有时间。
这儿没有银行。
有没有?★ the A-not-A form, Day 6

不有 does not exist in any context, in any tense. 有 is the single verb that lives entirely on the 没 side.

没 can drop its 有 when a verb follows我没去 = 我没有去. Both are correct; the short form is more common in speech.

4. ★ 从来不 and 从来没 — "never"

The split runs right through never too:

我从来不吃辣。I never eat spicy food (as a rule — I don't)
我从来没吃过辣的。I have never eaten spicy food (not once, ever)

从来不 = a standing rule about you. 从来没 = it has never once happened. English uses "never" for both, which is exactly why English speakers merge them.

(★ 过 guo marks "have ever done" — you meet it properly on Day 26.)

And the other negative words

还没★ not yet — 我还没吃饭
不再 / 再也不not any more — 我不再去了
一点儿也不★ not at all — 一点儿也不辣
一点儿也没not at all (past)
什么也不 / 什么都没nothing — 我什么都没买

还没 is the "not yet" of Chinese, and it is extremely common: 你吃饭了吗? — 还没。Two syllables, complete answer.

5. ⚠️ Two verbs with their own negatives

Positive★ Negative
没有
不是 (never 没是)

⚠️ 是 always takes 不, even about the past: 他昨天不是学生。是 describes an identity, not an event.

And 别 — "don't!"

别 bié + verb is the spoken prohibition (Day 19): 别走! · 别担心! · 别说话。

别 ≠ 没. 别 stops something from happening; 没 says it didn't.

6. Dialogue

Every negative in the conversation is doing its own job:去 · 来 · 没有 · 还吃 · 从来不吃辣 · 一点儿也不 · 做过.我从来不吃辣 (a rule about Alex) against 我吃过一次 (it did happen once)the whole 不/没 split in two lines.
