Day 26:

了 is NOT a past tense · the two 了s · ⚠️ 没 kills 了 · 过 · 在 + verb · 35 min

The last big day, and the one every course gets wrong.

### ⚠️★ 了 is not a past tense marker. Chinese has no tenses.

了 marks COMPLETION and CHANGE. Both of those often happen in the past, which is why the myth spreads — but the myth will actively break your Chinese, because:

昨天我很忙。 — I was busy yesterday. ★ No 了. 我没吃。 — I didn't eat. ★ No 了 — and 了 is impossible here. 下雨了。 — It's raining (now). ★ 了 with no past at all.

There are two different 了s. Separate them and the whole thing becomes manageable.

1. ★★ 了 ① — after the verb: the action completed

### Verb + 了 = that action got done.
我吃了饭。I ate / I've eaten
我买了三本书。I bought three books
他走了。He left
我看了那个电影。I saw that film

This 了 attaches to the verb and says the action reached completion. It is extremely common with a quantity — 买了三本书, 学了三个月 — because a quantity is what makes completion visible.

And it is not restricted to the past:

我吃了饭就去。 — I'll go once I've eaten. ★ Future, and 了 is still correct — because the eating will be complete before the going.

2. ★★ 了 ② — at the end: the situation changed

### Sentence + 了 = something is different now.
我饿了。★ I'm hungry (I've become hungry)
下雨了。★ It's raining (it started)
太贵了!Too expensive (Day 12)
我要走了。I'm off (Day 25)
他二十岁了。He's twenty now
我懂了!★ I get it!
好了。★ OK, done / that's enough

This 了 is about a NEW STATE, and it very often refers to the present. 下雨了 is happening right now. 我饿了 is how you feel this minute.

The English equivalent is often "now" or "'s started" or the perfect: he's twenty now, it's started raining, I've got it.

They can both appear

我吃了饭了。 — I've eaten (the eating is complete AND that's the current situation).

Do not worry about producing this. Recognise it, and use one 了 at a time.

3. ⚠️★★ Where 了 must NOT go

This is the part that matters most, because over-using 了 is the classic error of someone who was told it means "past".

① ⚠️ Never with 没

### 没 and 了 cannot appear together. Ever.
我没吃。我没吃了
他没来。他没来了
我没买。我没买了

The logic is clean: 没 says the event did not occur, and 了 says it completed. They contradict each other. (Day 23 gave you 没; today explains why it never takes 了.)

② ⚠️ Not for habits or repeated past actions

我以前每天去。我以前每天去了
小时候我常常去。常常去了

A habit never "completed" — it just used to happen. 以前 (before) and 常常 (often) do the work.

③ ⚠️ Not with descriptions of a past state

昨天我很忙。昨天我很忙了
那个电影很好看。

Adjectives describe, they do not complete. ⚠️ But 忙了 and 好了 exist and mean "has become busy / has become OK" — ★ that is 了 ②, a change, not a past tense.

④ ⚠️ Not with 是, 有, 想, 觉得, 知道

Verbs of state do not complete. 我是了学生 ❌ · 我有了 (exists but means "I've now got") · 我知道了is fine and means "ah, I see now" — a change.

4. ★★ 过 — "have ever"

### Verb + 过 = you have had that experience at some point.
我去过中国。★ I've been to China
你吃过火锅吗?Have you ever had hotpot?
我看过那个电影。I've seen that film
我没去过。★ I've never been (没, and 过 stays)

★ 过 vs 了 — the pair

我去了中国。★ I went to China (a specific trip — and I may still be there)
我去过中国。★ I've been to China (at some point; I came back)

过 is about your CV of experiences. 了 is about one event completing. English marks this with "I went" vs "I've been" — and this is the one place where Chinese makes the same distinction English does.

⚠️ 过 survives the negative; 了 does not. 我没去过 ✅ · 我没去了

5. ★ 在 + verb — happening right now

### 在 (or 正在) + verb = in progress
我在吃饭。I'm eating
他在打电话。He's on the phone
你在做什么?★ What are you doing?
我正在忙。I'm busy right now

This is the closest Chinese comes to a tense, and it is optional — 我吃饭 already covers I'm eating if the context is clear. 在 adds "right this minute".

⚠️ Do not combine 在 with 了. They point in opposite directions: in progress vs completed.

6. Questions with 了

你吃了吗?★ Have you eaten? (Day 4's greeting)
吃了没有?★ same thing, A-not-A style
你去过吗?Have you ever been?
去过没有?same

The answer repeats the verb (Day 6): 吃了。 / 没有。 / 去过。 / 没去过。

⚠️ ★ The negative answer to 你吃了吗? is 没有 or 还没 — never 没吃了.

7. Dialogue

Every 了 doing its own job:吃了 (completed) · 还没 (no 了 possible) · 忘了 (completed) · 没去过 (experience, negative) · 去了一次 (completed, with a quantity) ·下雨了 (a change — it just started) · 带伞了 (completed) ·我懂了 (a change — I get it now) · 等了你一个小时了 (both 了s).
