Day 27: Feelings, and the three de
★ Chinese has three different characters all pronounced de, all neutral tone, and all extremely common. Native speakers mix them up in writing; you only need to keep them apart in your head.
的 — my book · 得 — speaks well · 地 — walks slowly
The one you need to start producing today is ★ 得, because it is how you say someone does something well, badly, fast or fluently — including the compliment you will receive constantly: 你中文说得很好!
1. ★★ The three de
| Job | Position | Example | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ★ 的 | modifier + NOUN | before a noun | 我的书 · 好看的电影 |
| ★ 得 | VERB + how well | after a verb | 说得很好 · 跑得很快 |
| ★ 地 | adverb + VERB | before a verb | 慢慢地走 · 高兴地说 |
★ The memory hook is the position:
的 points RIGHT at a noun. 得 points LEFT back at a verb. 地 points RIGHT at a verb.
⚠️ All three are neutral tone and sound identical. In speech there is nothing to get wrong; the difficulty is only in writing and in knowing which structure you are building.
2. ★★ 得 — how well you do something
### Verb + 得 + adjective
| ★ 你中文说得很好! | Your Chinese is very good! |
|---|---|
| 他跑得很快。 | He runs fast |
| 我睡得很好。 | I slept well |
| 你吃得太少了。 | You're eating too little |
| 他来得很早。 | He came early |
⚠️ The adjective still needs 很 (Day 5) — 说得很好, not 说得好.
Negative and question
| 我说得不好。 | ★ I don't speak it well |
|---|---|
| 他跑得不快。 | He doesn't run fast |
| 你说得怎么样? | How well do you speak? |
| 说得好不好? | Is it good? |
★ 我说得不好 is the reply to the compliment — Chinese conversation opens with praise for your Chinese, and the expected answer is to play it down (Day 5: 哪里哪里):
— 你中文说得很好! — 哪里哪里,我说得不好。
⚠️ With an object, the verb repeats
| ★ 他说中文说得很好。 | He speaks Chinese well |
|---|---|
| 我打篮球打得不好。 | I don't play basketball well |
★ The verb appears twice — once with its object, once with 得. This looks strange and is completely standard. ⚠️ The shortcut everyone uses is to topicalise the object (Day 22): 他中文说得很好。 ★ Use that version.
3. ★ 地 — how you do something
### Adjective + 地 + verb
| 慢慢地走。 | Walk slowly |
|---|---|
| 高兴地说。 | Said happily |
| 认真地学习。 | Study seriously |
★ 得 describes the RESULT; 地 describes the MANNER. 说得很好 = speaks well — a judgement. 高兴地说 = says happily — how it was done.
⚠️ 地 is far less common in speech than the other two, and in casual writing it is often replaced by 的. ★ Recognise it; you rarely need to produce it.
4. Feelings
| 高兴 / 开心 | happy | 难过 | sad | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 生气 | angry | 累 | tired | |
| 紧张 | nervous | 害怕 | afraid | |
| 担心 | worried | 无聊 | bored | |
| 舒服 | comfortable, well | 不舒服 | ★ unwell | |
| 激动 | excited | 失望 | disappointed |
★ These are adjectives, so they take 很 and never 是 (Day 5): 我很累。
| 我很高兴。 | I'm happy |
|---|---|
| 我有点儿累。 | ★ I'm a bit tired (Day 18 — 有点儿 complains) |
| 我太累了。 | I'm exhausted |
| 我不太舒服。 | ★ I'm not feeling well |
| 我觉得很紧张。 | I feel nervous |
★ 不舒服 is how you say you feel ill — not 我病了 unless you really are ill. 我今天不太舒服 is the normal way to excuse yourself.
Asking and comforting
| 你怎么了? | What's wrong? (Day 24) |
|---|---|
| 你还好吗? | Are you OK? |
| 没事。 | ★ It's nothing / it's fine |
| 别担心。 | Don't worry |
| 会好的。 | ★ It'll be OK |
| 慢慢来。 | ★ Take your time |
| 辛苦了。 | ★ You've worked hard — thanks for your effort |
| 加油! | ★ Come on! / you can do it! |
★ 辛苦了 and 加油 have no clean English equivalent and are used constantly. 辛苦了 acknowledges someone's effort — said to colleagues, to a driver, to anyone who did something for you. 加油 is encouragement, literally "add oil".
5. Dialogue
★ 得 five times, doing the whole job: 睡得不好 · 说得很好 · 说得不好 · 说得太慢 · 进步得很快.★ 哪里哪里,我说得不好 — the deflection, exactly as §2 says.★ And 慢慢来 · 没事的 · 加油 · 辛苦了 — the four comfort phrases in four lines.
