Day 28: Joining sentences

⚠️ 和 does NOT join sentences · ★ 因为…所以… uses both halves · 就 · reactions · 30 min

Your grammar is finished. What separates you from a Chinese speaker now is length — you speak in short correct sentences, and people speak in long ones.

⚠️ And the very first thing English speakers reach for is wrong: ★ 和 hé joins NOUNS, never sentences. 我吃饭和我看电影 ❌. Section 1.

Then ★ Chinese uses BOTH halves of a connector pair where English drops one: 因为…所以… = because… so… — and both stay.

1. ⚠️★ 和 joins nouns only

✅ nouns❌ sentences
我和你我吃饭和我看电影
咖啡和茶
爸爸、妈妈和我

★ 和 hé and 跟 gēn both mean "and" between nouns (跟 is more spoken). Neither can join two clauses.

### To join two actions, use 然后 (then) or just put them side by side.
我吃了饭,然后看电影。I ate, then watched a film
我们先吃饭,再看电影。★ We'll eat first, then watch a film
我吃饭,他看电影。I eat, he watches films

★ 先…再… = "first… then…" and it is the natural way to sequence a plan. ★ A comma alone is often enough — Chinese happily juxtaposes clauses with no connector at all, and it does not sound choppy the way it would in English.

2. ★★ Pairs where BOTH halves stay

### Chinese keeps both connectors. English drops one.
★ 因为…所以…because… so…
★ 虽然…但是…although… but…
★ 如果…就…if… then…
★ 不但…而且…not only… but also…
因为我很忙,所以不能去。Because I'm busy, I can't go
虽然很贵,但是很好。Although it's expensive, it's good
如果你有时间,就来吧。If you have time, come
不但便宜,而且好吃。Not only cheap but tasty

⚠️ English forbids "Although X, but Y". ★ Chinese requires it. Dropping the second half is the mistake English speakers make, and it sounds incomplete.

★ You can drop the FIRST half in speech — 我很忙,所以不能去 is completely natural. What you should not drop is the second.

但是 and 可是

Both mean but. 可是 is slightly softer and more spoken; 但是 is neutral. ★ 不过 búguò is the casual "though" — 很好,不过有点儿贵。

3. ★★ 就 — the most useful character you don't have a translation for

就 jiù has no single English equivalent. It tightens a connection — then, right, just, exactly, as soon as.

如果你有时间,就来吧。…then come
我吃了饭就去。★ I'll go as soon as I've eaten
就在对面。★ It's right opposite (Day 16)
就是他!★ That's exactly him!
我就要这个。I want just this one
好,就这样。OK, let's leave it at that

★ 就 is everywhere in natural speech and almost invisible in textbooks, because it adds attitude rather than information. Start noticing it; use the four bolded phrases above.

★ 才 cái is its opposite — only then, not until: 他八点才来。 (He didn't come until eight.) ★ 就 = sooner/easier than expected. 才 = later/harder than expected.

他六点就来了。 — He came as early as six.他八点才来。 — He didn't come till eight.

4. Sequencing and adding

先…再…first… then…
然后then, after that
后来★ later on (past narrative)
最后finally
还有★ also, and another thing
而且moreover
另外besides
一边…一边…★ while — 一边吃一边说
我先去银行,然后去超市,最后回家。 他一边吃饭一边看手机。 — He eats while looking at his phone.

5. ★ Reacting — Chinese conversation expects noise back

是吗?★ Really? / is that so?
真的吗?Really?!
对对对。★ Yes, exactly (said fast, three times)
没错。That's right
原来如此。 / 原来是这样。★ Ah, I see now
太好了!Great!
可惜。What a shame
不会吧!★ No way!
嗯。Mm (listening)
是啊。Yeah

★ 对对对 and 原来如此 are the two to add today. 对对对 is agreement while someone is still talking; 原来如此 is "ah, that explains it" — and both make you sound like you are in the conversation rather than decoding it.

Buying time

那个…★ um… (literally "that one")
就是…it's like…
怎么说呢…★ how should I put it…
等一下hang on
让我想想。let me think

★ 那个 nàge is the Chinese "um" — it is a real filler used constantly, and using it instead of an English "uh" keeps you inside the language.

6. Dialogue — the same content, twice

A — correct, and nothing like real speech

小明: 你周末做了什么?Alex: 我去了上海。很好。很贵。小明: 好。

B — the same facts, with today's words

★ Version B contains no grammar you did not have on Day 27. Every difference is a connector, a filler or a reaction — 那个, 是吗, 虽然…但是, 先…然后…最后, 就, 对对对, 因为…所以, 不过, 原来如此, 如果…就.★ That is the entire gap between correct Chinese and real Chinese, and you just closed it.
