Day 5: 是 and 叫
One rule today prevents the most common English-speaker error in Chinese, and it will take you a week to stop breaking it:
### ★ 是 shì joins a noun to a noun. It NEVER goes in front of an adjective.
我是学生。 ✅ I am a student — noun. 我是好。 ❌ — 我很好。 ✅ I'm fine.
The reason is section 2, and it is the same insight that made Korean adjectives easy: ★ Chinese adjectives are already verbs. 好 does not mean good, it means "to be good" — so adding 是 is like saying "I am am-good."
1. 是 — noun = noun
| 我是学生。 Wǒ shì xuésheng. | I'm a student |
|---|---|
| 我是美国人。 Wǒ shì Měiguó rén. | I'm American |
| 他是我朋友。 Tā shì wǒ péngyou. | He's my friend |
| 这是茶。 Zhè shì chá. | This is tea |
| 我不是老师。 Wǒ bú shì lǎoshī. | I'm not a teacher |
★ Negate with 不是 bú shì (sandhi ② — Day 2). There is no other way to negate 是.
Nationality = country + 人
| 美国人 | American | 英国人 | British | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 中国人 | Chinese | 法国人 | French | |
| 加拿大人 | Canadian | 德国人 | German | |
| 澳大利亚人 | Australian | 韩国人 | Korean |
★ 人 rén is just "person" (Day 3). No new word to learn — country + person.
Jobs
| 学生 xuésheng | student | 老师 lǎoshī | teacher | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 医生 yīshēng | doctor | 护士 hùshi | nurse | |
| 工程师 gōngchéngshī | engineer | 律师 lǜshī | lawyer | |
| 记者 jìzhě | journalist | 服务员 fúwùyuán | waiter | |
| 老板 lǎobǎn | boss | 公司职员 | office worker |
⚠️ These are nouns, so they need 是 — 我是学生, never 我学生.
2. ★★ Adjectives are verbs — and 很 means nothing
### 好 hǎo does not mean "good". It means "to be good".
So the sentence needs no 是 and no verb at all:
| Literally | ||
|---|---|---|
| 我很好。 Wǒ hěn hǎo. | I very be-good | I'm fine |
| 他很忙。 Tā hěn máng. | He's busy | |
| 中国很大。 | China is big | |
| 这个很贵。 | This is expensive |
⚠️ And 很 is usually not "very"
很 hěn is listed as "very" and it mostly isn't. In these sentences it is a filler — a bare adjective sentence sounds incomplete or implies a comparison, so Chinese props it up with 很, and the "very" drains away.
| 我很好。 | ★ "I'm fine" — not "I'm very good" |
|---|---|
| 我好。 | ⚠️ sounds odd, or implies "I'm fine (unlike him)" |
| 我真的很好。 | now it means "I'm really fine" |
★ Practical rule: put 很 in front of an adjective by default and stop translating it. If you want a real very, use 非常 fēicháng or 真 zhēn.
The negative drops 很
| 我不忙。 Wǒ bù máng. | I'm not busy |
|---|---|
| 不贵。 Bú guì. | It's not expensive |
⚠️ 我不很忙 is wrong. Negation replaces the 很, it does not stack with it.
★ The check
Is the word after it a NOUN? → 是.Is it an ADJECTIVE? → 很, and no 是.
| 学生, 老师, 美国人, 朋友 | nouns → 我是学生 |
|---|---|
| 好, 忙, 大, 贵, 累 | adjectives → 我很忙 |
3. 叫 — what you're called
| 你叫什么名字? Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? | What's your name? |
|---|---|
| 我叫Alex。 Wǒ jiào Alex. | I'm called Alex |
| 您贵姓? Nín guì xìng? | ★ Your surname? (polite) |
| 我姓王。 Wǒ xìng Wáng. | My surname is Wang |
| 我姓王,叫小明。 | Wang is my surname, Xiaoming my given name |
★ 姓 xìng = surname (as a verb!), 叫 jiào = to be called. Both are verbs, so neither takes 是. 我是叫Alex is wrong — 我叫Alex.
★ 您贵姓 is the polite way to ask a name — literally "your honourable surname?" The answer names only the surname: 我姓王 — never 我贵姓王.
⚠️ Surname first, always: 王小明 = Mr Wang, given name Xiaoming.
Age and where you're from
| 你多大? Nǐ duō dà? | How old are you? |
|---|---|
| 我二十五岁。 Wǒ èrshíwǔ suì. | I'm 25 (★ no verb at all) |
| 你是哪国人? Nǐ shì nǎ guó rén? | What nationality are you? |
| 你从哪儿来? Nǐ cóng nǎr lái? | Where are you from? |
★ ★ 我二十五岁 has no verb. Age is expressed as a bare number + 岁, with nothing joining it. Not 我是二十五岁.
4. ★ 也 and 都 go before the verb
| 也 yě | also, too | ★ before the verb |
|---|---|---|
| 都 dōu | all, both | ★ before the verb |
| 我也是学生。 | I'm a student too |
|---|---|
| 我也很忙。 | I'm busy too |
| 我们都是学生。 | We're all students |
| 他们都很忙。 | They're all busy |
| 我们也都是。 | We all are too (也 then 都) |
⚠️ English puts "too" at the end. Chinese never does. 我是学生也 ❌ → 我也是学生 ✅
★ 都 refers backwards, to the subject — 我们都是学生 means we are all students. It never points forward at the object.
★ 我也是 on its own = "me too" — one of the most useful three-character phrases there is.
5. 呢 — bouncing the question back
★ Noun + 呢? = "and you? / what about ~?"
| 你呢? | And you? |
|---|---|
| 我很好,你呢? | I'm fine, and you? |
| 他呢? | What about him? |
| 我的书呢? | Where's my book? |
★ 呢 saves you rebuilding the whole question, and it is everywhere in real conversation. Learn it today and use it in every exchange.
6. Dialogue
小明: 你好! 你叫什么名字?Alex: 我叫Alex。您贵姓?小明: 我姓王,叫小明。你是哪国人?Alex: 我是美国人。你呢?小明: 我是中国人。你是学生吗?Alex: 是,我是学生。你也是学生吗?小明: 不是,我是工程师。Alex: 工作忙吗?小明: 很忙。最近特别忙。你呢?Alex: 我不太忙。我在学中文。小明: 你的中文很好!Alex: 哪里哪里,还差得远呢。
★ Four things.① 我叫Alex (verb 叫) vs 我是美国人 (noun, so 是) vs 很忙 (adjective, so 很) — ★ all three patterns in one conversation.② 你呢? twice — bouncing the question back without rebuilding it.③ 我也是学生吗 — 也 before the verb.④ ★ 哪里哪里 nǎli nǎli — the standard deflection of a compliment, like Korean 아니에요. Saying 谢谢 to "your Chinese is good" sounds oddly pleased with yourself.
