Day 19: vouloir / pouvoir

to want / to be able to + an infinitive after them · 30 min

Today's two verbs are modals. Put an infinitive after them and every verb you have learned so far turns into a request, an offer or a permission question. This is the most immediately useful day of Week 3.

1. vouloir (to want)

★ je veux vs je voudrais

The Je voudrais from Day 12 was vouloir's polite form all along. Now you know why.It is the exact same relationship as English I want → I would like.Default to voudrais; save veux for friends.

How it's used

⚠️ No "to" between the two verbs. English says "I want to leave"; French puts the infinitive straight after — Je veux partir. Inserting anything there is wrong.

2. pouvoir (can / may)

⚠️ veux (vuh) and peux (puh) sound nearly identical — only the v/p differs.This is the pair people get wrong most in dictation. Train your ear on it today.

Three uses

★ Je peux ___ ? (may I…) and Vous pouvez ___ ? (could you…) are today's real output. Swap in any infinitive and you have a sentence.

⚠️ French does not split "can" from "may" the way English does. Je peux covers both ability and permission, so you never have to pick.

★ une chambre (SHAHM-bruh) = a hotel room · une nuit (NWEE) = one night ⚠️ FAUX AMI: une chambre is a bedroom, not a chamber, and une salle is the general word for a room. Asking for une salle at a hotel gets you a conference room.
