Day 23: Negation

ne … pas + other negatives · 25 min

You have been building negatives for weeks (Je ne comprends pas, Je n'aime pas…). Today you organise the rule and extend it. The rule itself is simple — you wrap the verb in ne and pas.

1. ★ The basic rule — wrap the verb

subject + ne + [verb] + pas + the rest

⚠️ French negation is two words with the verb in the middle. English puts one word after the verb ("I do not speak") and drags in a "do" that French does not have.Never translate the "do". Je ne fais pas parler is not a sentence.

Before a vowel, ne → n'

⚠️ h counts as a vowel (it is silent) → Il n'habite pas.

2. With a modal — wrap the first verb

When an infinitive follows, ne…pas wraps only the conjugated verb.

★ This rule gets reused unchanged on Day 25 (near future) and Day 26 (past).

3. ★ The article → de rule (all together)

This trap has come back every week. Here it is in one place.

One line: negate "have / eat / drink" and it becomes de; negate "like" or "be" and nothing changes.

4. Other negatives — swap out the pas

★ Je ne comprends rien is stronger than Je ne comprends pas — "I got none of that". ⚠️ The ne stays in all of these. English drops the second negative ("I never smoke", not "I don't never smoke"); French keeps both halves. Je fume jamais only works in the casual speech below.

5. In speech, the ne disappears

French people barely pronounce the ne.

★ Write the ne; expect it to be missing when you listen.Miss this and you will hear a negative sentence as a positive one — a genuinely dangerous misunderstanding, not a cosmetic one.Je sais pas ("dunno") is one of the most frequent sentences in spoken French.

★ Je sais (zhuh SEH) = I know ↔ Je ne sais pas = I don't know ★ plus tard (plew TAR) = later
