Day 27: Feelings & states

tired · happy · hungry — all in one place · 25 min

No new grammar today. Instead you sort out the feeling and state expressions, which are a mix of être-type, avoir-type and neither. Without this sorting you will keep making the same mistake for the rest of the month — and English is what causes it, because English says "I am" for every single one of them.

1. ★ Three groups

① être + adjective (qualities and moods)

FrenchRespellingMeaning

② avoir + noun (physical sensations)

FrenchRespellingMeaning
J'ai faim.zhay FANI'm hungry
J'ai soif.zhay SWAFI'm thirsty
J'ai froid / chaud.zhay FRWA / SHOHI'm cold / hot
J'ai sommeil.zhay so-MAYI'm sleepy
J'ai peur.zhay PURI'm scared
J'ai mal (à la tête).zhay mal a la TETMy (head) hurts

③ Neither

FrenchRespellingMeaning
Ça va.sa VAI'm OK
Ça ne va pas.sa nuh va PAI'm not OK
Je m'ennuie.zhuh mahn-NWEEI'm bored
J'en ai marre.zhahn nay MARI'm fed up
Je suis crevé(e).zhuh swee kruh-VAYI'm shattered (casual)
The one-line rule: adjective → être, noun → avoir.fatigué is an adjective → Je suis fatigué. faim is a noun → J'ai faim.English flattens both into "I am", which is exactly why you have to sort them by hand.

2. Turning the dial

FrenchRespellingMeaningExample
un peuuhn PUHa bitJe suis un peu fatigué.
asseza-SAYquiteJe suis assez content.
trèstrehveryJ'ai très faim.
troptrohtooJe suis trop occupé.
vraimentvreh-MAHNreallyJe suis vraiment désolé.
⚠️ The avoir group takes très tooJ'ai très faim.Literally that is "I have very hunger", which feels wrong in English — say it anyway.J'ai beaucoup faim ❌ is the error to avoid.

3. Asking how someone is

FrenchRespellingMeaning
Ça va ?sa VAYou OK?
Ça va pas ?sa va PANot OK?
Qu'est-ce qu'il y a ?kess keel YAWhat's wrong?
Tu as l'air fatigué.tew a lair fa-tee-GAYYou look tired
Tout va bien ?too va BYANEverything all right?

Reacting

FrenchMeaning
Ce n'est pas grave. It's fine / no worries
Bon courage !Good luck / hang in there!
Repose-toi bien.Get some rest
Je suis désolé pour toi.I'm sorry to hear that
Tant mieux !Glad to hear it!
Dommage !That's a shame!

Bon courage ! has no clean English equivalent — it is what you say to someone facing something hard (a shift, an exam, a long day). Not "good luck" (that is bonne chance, for things involving luck). The French say it constantly.

4. Adding a reason (Day 13's parce que, revisited)

[state] + parce que + [reason]
FrenchMeaning
Je suis fatigué parce que j'ai beaucoup travaillé.I'm tired because I worked a lot
J'ai faim parce que je n'ai pas mangé.I'm hungry because I haven't eaten
Je suis content parce que c'est vendredi.I'm happy because it's Friday
Je suis stressé parce que j'ai un examen.I'm stressed because I have an exam

Today's state + yesterday's past tense (Day 26) as the reason is the combination that suddenly makes you sound like an adult rather than a textbook.

5. Dialogue

A: Ça va ? Tu as l'air fatigué. sa VA? tew a lair fa-tee-GAY.B: Oui, je suis très fatigué. J'ai travaillé jusqu'à minuit hier.wee, zhuh swee treh fa-tee-GAY. zhay tra-va-YAY zhews-ka mee-NWEE ee-YAIR.A: Oh là là. Tu as mangé ce matin ? oh la LA. tew a mahn-ZHAY suh ma-TAN?B: Non, j'ai pas eu le temps. J'ai très faim, en fait.nohn, zhay pa ew luh TAHN. zhay treh FAN, ahn FET. No, I didn't have time. I'm starving, actually.A: On va manger ! Après, repose-toi bien.ohn va mahn-ZHAY! a-PREH, ruh-poz-twa BYAN.B: Merci. Tu es sympa. mair-SEE. tew eh sam-PA.A: Bon courage pour aujourd'hui ! bohn koo-RAHZH poor oh-zhoor-DWEE!

Oh là là — surprise or sympathy. It is not the film cliché; French people really do say it several times a day, and not in the flirtatious sense English attaches to it. ★ en fait (ahn FET) = actually ⚠️ — and note this is the correct translation of "actually", not actuellement, which means "currently" (the Day 1 faux ami). ★ j'ai pas eu — the dropped ne of casual speech (Day 23).
