Day 6: avoir (to have)

j'ai / tu as / il·elle a + age · possession · 30 min

If être is "to be", avoir is "to have". But French has an age, has hunger, has cold and has fear. English says "I am hungry" for every one of those, which makes this the single biggest source of beginner errors for English speakers. Fix the instinct today and the next 24 days get much cleaner.

1. avoir conjugation

FrenchRespellingMeaning
j'aizhayI have
tu astew AHyou have
il / elle aeel / ell AHhe / she has
nous avonsnoo za-VOHNwe have
vous avezvoo za-VAYyou have
ils / elles onteel / ell ZOHNthey have

Memory rhythm (say it 5×):

zhay · tew-AH · eel-AH · noo-za-VOHN · voo-za-VAY · eel-ZOHN

It is j'ai, not je ai — je shrinks to j' in front of a vowel (same rule as J'habite on Day 3).

⚠️ The biggest trap of the week: ils ont (eel-ZOHN, they have) vs ils sont (eel-SOHN, they are). One sound apart, completely different meaning. z sound → avoir. s sound → être. Drill this in dictation today.

2. ★ Things French "has" that English "is"

FrenchRespellingLiterallyActually means
J'ai 30 ans.zhay trahn-TAHNI have 30 yearsI'm 30
J'ai faim.zhay FANI have hungerI'm hungry
J'ai soif.zhay SWAFI have thirstI'm thirsty
J'ai froid.zhay FRWAI have coldI'm cold
J'ai chaud.zhay SHOHI have heatI'm hot
J'ai sommeil.zhay so-MAYI have sleepI'm sleepy
J'ai peur.zhay PURI have fearI'm scared
J'ai mal.zhay MALI have painIt hurts
J'ai raison.zhay reh-ZOHNI have reasonI'm right
⚠️ Je suis faim is not an accent, it is nonsense — it says "I am hunger itself".Same for Je suis 30. These are the #1 and #2 mistakes English speakers make in French, because English uses "am" for all of them. Hunger, thirst, cold, fear, age → avoir. But tired genuinely is an adjective, so it takes être → Je suis fatigué. (Day 5).There is no logic that predicts which is which. Learn the avoir list above as a closed set.

Saying where it hurts

FrenchRespellingMeaning
J'ai mal à la tête.zhay mal a la TETI have a headache
J'ai mal au ventre.zhay mal oh VAHN-truhI have a stomach ache
J'ai mal à la gorge.zhay mal a la GORZHI have a sore throat

3. Possession — avoir doing its actual job

FrenchRespellingMeaning
J'ai un frère.zhay uhn FRAIRI have a brother
J'ai une sœur.zhay ewn SURI have a sister
J'ai deux enfants.zhay duh zahn-FAHNI have two children
J'ai une voiture.zhay ewn vwa-TEWRI have a car
Je n'ai pas de temps.zhuh nay pa duh TAHNI don't have time
Vous avez l'heure ?voo za-vay LURDo you have the time?
Vous avez une table ?voo za-vay ewn TA-bluhDo you have a table? (restaurant)

The indefinite articles un / une / des

MasculineFemininePlural
a / an / someun (uhn)une (ewn)des (day)
exampleun caféune tabledes amis
⚠️ French has a plural article and English doesn't. English says "I have friends";French must say "I have des friends" — J'ai des amis. Dropping des is one of the most persistent English-speaker habits all month.⚠️ In a negative sentence, un/une/des all collapse to de.J'ai un frère. → Je n'ai pas de frère.J'ai des enfants. → Je n'ai pas d'enfants.(Full negation is Day 23. For today just learn Je n'ai pas de ___ as one block.)

4. être vs avoir — just the confusing ones

EnglishFrenchWhich verb
I'm 30J'ai 30 ans.avoir
I'm AmericanJe suis américain.être
I'm hungryJ'ai faim.avoir
I'm tiredJe suis fatigué.être
I'm cold (me)J'ai froid.avoir
It's cold (weather)Il fait froid.*faire
I have a brotherJ'ai un frère.avoir
I'm in ParisJe suis à Paris.être

* Il fait froid (eel feh FRWA) = the weather is cold. Note that "I'm cold" and "it's cold" use two different verbs in French where English uses one. The verb faire comes on Day 22; today just take the phrase.

5. Dialogue

A: Tu as faim ?tew a FAN?Are you hungry?B: Oui, j'ai très faim ! Et j'ai soif aussi.wee, zhay treh FAN! ay zhay SWAF oh-SEE.Yes, I'm starving! And I'm thirsty too.A: Tu as quel âge ?tew a kell AHZH?How old are you?B: J'ai vingt-huit ans. Et toi ?zhay van-twee TAHN. ay TWA?A: Moi, j'ai trente ans. Tu as quel âge ? = how old are you. Formally: Quel âge avez-vous ?aussi (oh-SEE, too) and mais (meh, but) — from today you can join sentences.
