Day 21: Week 3 Review
Week 3 was the steep part: the dative, the two-way prepositions, modals and separable verbs. Everything after today is easier than what you just did.
Same rule as always — tests first, summary after. And fill in the numbers table in section 7; you now have three data points.
1. Week 3 on one page
★★ The dative (Day 15)
| m | f | n | pl | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nom | der | die | das | die |
| Akk | den | die | das | die |
| Dat | dem | ★ der | dem | ★ den + noun -n |
Pronouns: mir · dir · ihm · ihr · ihm · uns · euch · ihnen/Ihnen ★ Always dative: aus · bei · mit · nach · seit · von · zu Contractions: zum · zur · beim · vom · im · am Dative verbs: helfen · danken · gefallen · gehören · schmecken · passen · antworten ★ Das gefällt mir = I like it · Wie geht es dir? = dative all along
★★ The nine two-way prepositions (Day 16)
an · auf · hinter · in · neben · über · unter · vor · zwischen
Movement → accusative (wohin?) · Position → dative (wo?)
Ich gehe ins Kino / Ich bin im Kino nach cities & countries · zu people & errands · in going inside ★ zu Hause (at home) / nach Hause (to home)
Directions (Day 17)
zum (der/das) / zur (die) · geradeaus · links · rechts · an der Ampel Imperative: Gehen Sie! (Sie) · Geh! Nimm! Fahr! (du) · Geht! (ihr) ★ The recovery script: Wie bitte? → Langsamer, bitte. → Also: …, richtig?
Transport & shopping (Day 18)
mit dem Bus/Zug/Auto · mit der U-Bahn · ⚠️ zu Fuß ⚠️ fahren if a vehicle is involved, gehen only for walking einfach / hin und zurück · das Gleis · umsteigen · die Verspätung ★ Sonntag geschlossen · Pfand · Brauchen Sie eine Tüte?
★★ Modals (Day 19)
können · wollen · müssen · dürfen · sollen · möchten
Modal in position 2, infinitive at the END.
★ ich and er are identical and take no ending ⚠️ ich will = I WANT, not "I will" ⚠️ nicht müssen = don't have to · nicht dürfen = must not
★★ Separable verbs (Day 20)
Stressed prefix flies to the end. Unstressed prefix stays.
Ich stehe um sieben auf. → with a modal, it reunites: Ich muss um sieben aufstehen. Never separate: be- ge- er- ver- ent- zer- emp-
2. ✍️ Dictation — 20 sentences
- Wie geht es dir? — Danke, gut.
Scoring
| 18–20 | Week 3 landed. Week 4 will feel easy |
|---|---|
| 14–17 | Normal for the hardest week |
| 10–13 | Check the type: dem/den/der → Day 15 · missing prefixes → Day 20 · ins/im → Day 16 |
| under 10 | Take one extra day on Days 15 and 16 before Day 22 |
⚠️ The specific error to look for: did you drop the final prefix? Sentences 17–20 all end on one. Losing auf, ab, an is the classic week-3 dictation failure and it is a listening problem, not a grammar one.
3. 🗣 Speaking test — three minutes
Record once, no notes, no restarting. Three minutes — half again as long as Day 14.
The checklist
- everything from Day 14 (name, origin, family, likes, job, age)
- your daily routine with at least four separable verbs
- three modals — one können, one müssen, one möchten or wollen
- one thing you're not allowed to do (nicht dürfen)
- one thing you don't have to do (nicht müssen)
- how you get to work or school (mit dem / mit der / zu Fuß)
- two places described by position (dative — neben, gegenüber, hinter)
- one thing you like using gefällt mir
- where you're going this weekend (wohin — accusative or nach)
- a question back
Model answer (~2 min 50)
Hallo!
★ Compare with Day 14. The sentences are longer, the verbs are at the end, and the whole thing has a shape Day 14 did not have. That shape is what week 3 bought you.
4. 🎭 Role-play — a day out, ten turns
Open the Role-play mission. Scene: you're a visitor in Berlin for one day. Survive ten exchanges without English.
- Ask a stranger (Sie) how to get to the main station
- Fail to understand — ask for it slower
- Repeat it back and confirm — Also: …, richtig?
- At the counter: buy a return ticket to Potsdam
- Ask which platform, and whether you have to change
- On arrival: ask if there's a pharmacy nearby
- In a shop: ask the price, ask for another colour, buy it
- Say what you have to do this evening (müssen)
- Say what you want to do instead (möchten / wollen)
- Arrange to be picked up — abholen, anrufen
Rescue phrases still legal: Wie bitte? · Noch einmal, bitte. · Langsamer, bitte. · Ich verstehe nicht. · Wie sagt man … auf Deutsch?

| verb not at the end | structure gap | Day 19 §1 |
| dropped prefixes | listening gap | Day 20 §1 + dictation |
★ Where you actually are at day 21
You can now: get from an airport to an address by asking strangers, buy tickets, shop, order, describe your whole day, say what you can, must, may and want to do, and locate anything in a room or a city. That is functional German. Three weeks ago you could not read the alphabet aloud.
What is still missing is exactly one thing: the past. You cannot yet say what you did yesterday — which means every conversation stays stuck in today. Day 25 fixes that, and it is the last big grammar day of the challenge.
Week 4 is: present tense properly (22), negation (23), questions (24), the past (25), subordinate clauses (26), feelings (27), linking your speech (28), conversation (29), and the final challenge (30).
★ Nothing in week 4 is as hard as Day 15 or Day 19. You have already done the expensive part.

★ The speaking-length row is the one to look at. Accuracy moves slowly and unevenly;how long you can keep going moves in a straight line, and it is the honest measure of whether this is working. If you filled three minutes today, you are exactly where thirty days is supposed to put you.
