Day 22: The present tense, properly
You have been using the present tense since Day 3. Today closes the three gaps that are still costing you.
① Some verbs change their vowel — but only for du and er/sie/es, and you have already met most of them. ② There is no -ing form in German, and English speakers spend months trying to build one. ③ The German present also does the job of the English future and the English present perfect. One tense, three English tenses — which is a saving, not a cost.
1. The endings, one last time
| wohnen | arbeiten | heißen | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | wohne | arbeite | heiße |
| du | wohnst | arbeitest | heißt |
| er/sie/es | wohnt | arbeitet | heißt |
| wir | wohnen | arbeiten | heißen |
| ihr | wohnt | arbeitet | heißt |
| sie/Sie | wohnen | arbeiten | heißen |
(-t/-d stems slide in an e; -ß/-s/-z stems absorb the s of -st. Day 3 §2.)
2. ★ Stem-changing verbs — and only two rows change
The vowel changes forduander/sie/esonly. Everything else keeps the infinitive's vowel.
a → ä
| fahren | schlafen | tragen | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | fahre | schlafe | trage |
| du | fährst | schläfst | trägst |
| er/sie/es | fährt | schläft | trägt |
| wir/sie/Sie | fahren | schlafen | tragen |
| ihr | fahrt | schlaft | tragt |
Also: laufen → läufst/läuft · fallen → fällst/fällt · halten → hältst/hält · lassen → lässt/lässt
e → i
| sprechen | essen | geben | helfen | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | spreche | esse | gebe | helfe |
| du | sprichst | isst | gibst | hilfst |
| er/sie/es | spricht | isst | gibt | hilft |
Also: treffen → triffst/trifft · vergessen → vergisst/vergisst · nehmen → ★ nimmst / nimmt (doubles the m too — the most irregular of the set)
e → ie
| sehen | lesen | empfehlen | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | sehe | lese | empfehle |
| du | siehst | liest | empfiehlst |
| er/sie/es | sieht | liest | empfiehlt |
★ You already know these. Was empfehlen Sie? (Day 12), Nimm! (Day 17), Er sieht fern (Day 20), Ich helfe dir (Day 15). Today just names the pattern.
And one true oddity
| wissen (to know a fact) | |
|---|---|
| ich weiß · du weißt · er weiß | wir/sie wissen · ihr wisst |
Ich weiß es nicht. — I don't know. ★ The single most useful sentence in any language. ⚠️ wissen = know a fact; kennen = know a person or place.Ich kenne Berlin / Ich weiß, wo es ist.
★ The pattern has a purpose. Notice that the imperative du-forms from Day 17 follow the same vowel — Nimm! Sprich! Lies! — but a→ä verbs drop it: Fahr!, not Fähr!One rule, two places.
3. ★★ There is no -ing
German has ONE present tense. It covers both English ones.
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Ich lerne Deutsch. | I learn German and I am learning German |
| Er arbeitet. | He works and he is working |
| Was machst du? | What do you do? and What are you doing? |
⚠️ Do not try to build one. Ich bin lernen, Ich bin lernend — both are wrong, and both are what English speakers reach for in week 4. There is nothing to translate. I am learning is simply ich lerne.
If you genuinely need to stress right now, use an adverb:
| Ich lerne gerade Deutsch. | I'm learning German right now |
|---|---|
| Ich arbeite im Moment nicht. | I'm not working at the moment |
| Er telefoniert gerade. | He's on the phone right now |
★ gerade is the word you want. It carries everything the English -ing carries in the cases where it actually matters.4. ★ The present is also the future
German has a future tense (werden + infinitive), and native speakers mostly do not use it. For anything scheduled or intended, they use the present with a time word — exactly the way English says "I'm flying to Berlin tomorrow".
| Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin. | Tomorrow I'm going to Berlin |
|---|---|
| Nächste Woche fange ich an. | Next week I start |
| Heute Abend gehen wir ins Kino. | Tonight we're going to the cinema |
| Im Sommer besuche ich meine Familie. | In summer I'll visit my family |
★ The time word does the work. No new grammar, no werden. Day 25 gives you the one future construction that is genuinely common — and it is not this one either.
5. ★★ seit + present — where German and English disagree
English uses the present perfect. German uses the plain present.
| German (present) | English (perfect) |
|---|---|
| Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren hier. | I have been living here for two years |
| Ich lerne seit drei Wochen Deutsch. | I have been learning German for three weeks |
| Wie lange bist du schon hier? | How long have you been here? |
| Ich arbeite seit Januar bei der Firma. | I have worked there since January |
⚠️ This is a real error, not a stylistic one. Putting it in the past — Ich habe seit zwei Jahren hier gewohnt — tells a German you no longer live there. The logic is consistent: the action is still going on, so German uses the tense for things going on.
★ The trigger words are seit and schon. When you see either, stay in the present. And remember from Day 15 that seit takes the dative: seit zwei Jahren, seit einem Monat.
6. Dialogue
Anna: Was machst du gerade? — vass MAKHST doo guh-RAH-duhAlex: Ich lese ein Buch auf Deutsch. Es ist schwer.Anna: Wie lange lernst du schon Deutsch?Alex: Seit drei Wochen. Ich spreche noch nicht gut.Anna: Doch! Du sprichst sehr gut. — dokh! doo SHPRIKHST zair GOOTAlex: Danke. Ich vergesse aber alles.Anna: Das ist normal.
