Day 23: Saying no

kein vs nicht · where nicht goes · nie, nichts, niemand · noch nicht / nicht mehr · 30 min

Two questions today, and the second is the one nobody teaches you properly.

① kein or nicht? — a clean rule, three lines, done. ② Where in the sentence does nicht go? — the thing that makes learners sound foreign long after their vocabulary is fine. Section 3 gives you a rule that actually works.

1. kein or nicht?

### kein negates a noun that has ein or no article at all.### nicht negates everything else.

★ The one-line version: "Could I have said a or some there? Then kein." a car → kein Auto · some time → keine Zeit. But the car and my car are specific, so they take nicht.

kein takes the ein-endings you have known since Day 6, in all three cases: keinen Kaffee (akk) · keiner Frau (dat) · keine Zeit.

2. ⚠️ One negative per sentence

German is like English and unlike French or Spanish: you negate once.

Ich gehe nie ins Kino.Ich gehe nicht nie…
If a sentence already contains kein, nichts, niemand, nie or nirgendwo, it is already negative. Do not add nicht.

3. ★★ Where does nicht go?

Here is the rule, and it is genuinely reliable:

### nicht goes as late in the sentence as it can — but it must come BEFORE any of these five.

And it comes after everything else — subject, verb, objects, and time expressions:

Ich kenne ihn nicht.after the object
Ich komme heute nicht.after the time
Ich arbeite hier nicht.after the place-as-location
Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch nicht.after both objects
★ Think of the end of a German sentence as reserved. The prefix, the infinitive and the "what/where it is" all live there permanently. nicht queues up just in front of whichever one is present — and if none is, it goes last.

Negating one specific word

Put nicht immediately in front of the thing you are contradicting:

Ich fahre nicht heute nach Berlin, sondern morgen.not today
Nicht ich habe das gesagt.not me
Ich trinke nicht viel Kaffee.not much

★ sondern is the word that goes with this — "but rather", used only after a negative:

Nicht heute, sondern morgen.Not today, but tomorrow
Er ist kein Lehrer, sondern Student.He's not a teacher but a student
Ich trinke Tee, aber keinen Kaffee.(no contradiction → aber)

⚠️ aber vs sondern: use sondern only when you are replacing something you just denied. Otherwise aber.

4. The rest of the negative words

★ nicht mehr and noch nicht are the pair to drill — they are the two most useful and the two English speakers reach for most often:

Ich arbeite nicht mehr.I don't work any more
Ich arbeite noch nicht.I don't work yet

5. And the answer word from Day 4

doch contradicts a negative — and now you can see why German needs it, since so much of the language is built on negating precisely:

Du kommst nicht, oder? — Doch!Yes I am!

Aber heute wirklich nicht.Anna: Arbeitest du noch? — Alex: Nein, ich arbeite nicht mehr. Ich bin fertig.Anna: Und warum kommst du dann nicht mit?Alex: Ich bin müde. Und ich kenne deine Freunde nicht.Anna: Das ist kein Problem! Sie sind sehr nett.Alex: Ich weiß. Ich mag sie, aber ich möchte heute nichts machen.Anna: Also nicht heute, sondern morgen?Alex: Genau. Morgen gern. Ich rufe dich morgen früh an.Anna: Aber ruf mich nicht vor zehn an! Ich stehe am Wochenende nie früh auf.
★ Watch the last line: ruf mich nicht vor zehn an — nicht sits before vor zehn because that phrase is being negated, and an still lands at the very end.And Ich stehe … nie früh auf: the negative word queues in front of the prefix, exactly like nicht would.
