Day 24: Questions, all together

wer / wen / wem · welcher · was für · womit, wofür, darüber · tags · 30 min

You have been asking questions since Day 4. Today adds the four pieces that are still missing, and two of them are the reason your questions still sound like a textbook.

wer has three forms — the case system reaches the question words too. ② You cannot say "with what" as mit was. German fuses it into womit — and the answer fuses the same way into damit. Section 4 is the single most useful thing here.

1. The two shapes, one more time

W-question — verb stays secondWo wohnst du? · Wann kommt der Bus?
Yes-no question — verb goes firstWohnst du hier? · Kommt der Bus?

⚠️ Still no do. Where do you liveWo wohnst du?

★ And with the week-3 structures, the end of the sentence still holds the prefix or infinitive:

Wann stehst du auf? · Kannst du mir helfen? · Willst du mitkommen?

2. ★★ wer, wen, wem — "who" in three cases

English keeps a fossil of this — who / whom — and has almost abandoned it. German uses all three, every day.

CaseAsks for
wernominativethe subjectWer ist das? — Who is that?
wenaccusativethe direct objectWen siehst du? — Who(m) do you see?
wemdativethe indirect objectWem hilfst du? — Who(m) are you helping?
They rhyme with the articles, which is the whole trick:wer ↔ der · wen ↔ den · wem ↔ dem If you know which article the answer takes, you know which question word to use.
Wer kommt heute? — Anna kommt.(nominative)
Wen kennst du hier? — Ich kenne den Mann.(accusative — kennen)
Wem gehört das? — Das gehört dem Mann.(dative — gehören, Day 15)
Wem hilfst du? — Ich helfe meiner Schwester.(dative — helfen)

And after a preposition, the preposition decides:

Für wen ist das?für is accusative → wen
Mit wem kommst du?mit is dative → wem
Von wem ist der Brief?von is dative → wem

3. welcher and was für ein

welcher — which (out of a known set)

It declines exactly like der / die / das:

mfnpl
Nomwelcherwelchewelcheswelche
Akkwelchenwelchewelcheswelche
Datwelchemwelcherwelchemwelchen
Welcher Zug fährt nach Berlin?which train (subject)
Welchen Zug nimmst du?which train (object)
Welche Farbe möchten Sie?which colour
Von welchem Gleis?from which platform — ★ Day 18

was für ein — what kind of

Was für ein Auto hast du?What kind of car do you have?
Was für einen Wein möchten Sie?(akk — object)
Was für Musik hörst du?(no article with plurals/uncountables)

⚠️ für here is not the preposition — it does not force the accusative. The case comes from the noun's job in the sentence, as normal. Was für ein Auto ist das? (subject → nominative).

welcher = pick one from these. was für ein = describe the type.

4. ★★ womit, wofür, darüber — asking about things

### You cannot say mit was. German fuses it: wo + preposition = womit.
PrepositionQuestion word
mitwomitWomit fährst du? — What are you going by?
fürwofürWofür ist das? — What's that for?
überworüberWorüber sprecht ihr? — What are you talking about?
anworanWoran denkst du? — What are you thinking about?
vonwovonWovon redest du? — What are you on about?
aufworaufWorauf wartest du? — What are you waiting for?

The r appears when the preposition starts with a vowelworüber, woran, worauf — purely so it can be said. Same reason English says an apple.

The answer fuses too: da- + preposition

damitwith it
dafürfor it
darüberabout it
daranon/about it
daraufon it, for it
Worüber sprecht ihr?Darüber. (About that.)Wofür ist das? — Das ist dafür.Ich fahre mit dem Zug → Ich fahre damit.

⚠️ This is the biggest single "you sound foreign" fix available to you. English says with it, for it, about it as two words, so learners say mit es, für es, über es — all wrong, and instantly noticeable. Things fuse. Say damit, not mit es.

★ But people never fuse

thingperson
questionWomit fährst du?Mit wem fährst du?
answerIch fahre damit.Ich fahre mit ihm.
questionWofür ist das?Für wen ist das?
answerDas ist dafür.Das ist für ihn.
### Thing → wo(r)- / da-. Person → preposition + wen/wem.

5. Tags and softeners

Confirming — "…right?"

Du kommst morgen, oder?★ the everyday one
Das ist richtig, nicht wahr?slightly more formal
Du kommst, ne?very casual, spoken
⚠️ Remember the answer: after a negative question, doch means "yes, actually".Du kommst nicht, oder?Doch!

Being polite

Könnten Sie mir helfen?Could you help me? — softer than Können Sie
Darf ich fragen …?May I ask …?
Wissen Sie, wo …?Do you know where …?
Entschuldigung, eine Frage:Excuse me, one question:

Könnten is a Konjunktiv form and it is beyond this challenge to build — but it is one word and it makes every request politer. Learn it as a phrase: Könnten Sie …?

6. Dialogue

Anna: Wer kommt heute Abend?
★ Four pairs in twelve lines: Wer / Wen · Womit (thing) vs mit wem (person) · Worüber / darüber · Für wen (person, so no fusing). That contrast is the whole day.
