Day 28: Linking your speech
Your grammar is finished. What separates you from a German speaker now is not accuracy — it is the small words that carry attitude.
Komm mit. (Come along.) — correct, and flat as a road sign. Komm doch mal mit! — the same words plus two particles, and now it is warm, casual, inviting, and unmistakably native.
These particles have no English translation, which is exactly why no course teaches them properly and why learners sound stiff for years. Today is the fix.
1. ★★ Modal particles — the words that carry tone
They are tiny, unstressed, and they sit in the middle of the sentence. Do not try to translate them; learn the situations they belong to.
mal — softens anything
| Warte mal. | Hang on a sec |
|---|---|
| Komm mal her. | Come here a moment |
| Kannst du mir mal helfen? | Could you give me a hand? |
| Sag mal, … | Tell me, … / Say, … |
★ mal turns an order into a request. Warte is "wait!"; warte mal is "hang on". If you learn one particle today, learn this one — it makes every imperative from Day 17 polite at zero cost.
doch — pushes back, or encourages
| Komm doch mit! | Do come along! (warm encouragement) |
|---|---|
| Das ist doch klar. | But that's obvious (mild "come on") |
| Setz dich doch. | Do sit down |
| Doch! | Yes I am! (the Day 4 answer word) |
ja — shared surprise or shared knowledge
| Das ist ja toll! | Well that's great! |
|---|---|
| Du bist ja früh! | You're early! (I notice and I'm surprised) |
| Das weißt du ja. | You know that already |
denn — makes a question friendly
| Was machst du denn? | So what are you up to? |
|---|---|
| Wo warst du denn? | Where were you, then? |
| Wie heißt du denn? | And what's your name? |
⚠️ This is a different denn from Day 26. That one meant because. This one is an unstressed particle inside a question and means nothing at all — it just removes the interrogation-room edge. A bare Wo warst du? can sound like an accusation; Wo warst du denn? does not.
halt / eben — "that's just how it is"
| Das ist halt so. | That's just how it is |
|---|---|
| Dann eben nicht. | Fine, not then |
★ You do not have to produce all of these. Start with mal and denn — they are the two that most change how you come across, and both are almost impossible to misuse.
2. ⚠️ Connectors that keep V2
Day 26 gave you conjunctions that send the verb to the end. These are different — they are adverbs, they occupy position 1, and the verb stays second, which means the subject jumps behind it (Day 4, still running everything).
| deshalb / deswegen / darum | therefore, that's why | Deshalb komme ich nicht. |
|---|---|---|
| trotzdem | nevertheless | Trotzdem gehe ich hin. |
| außerdem | besides, also | Außerdem habe ich keine Zeit. |
| also | so, well | Also gehen wir. |
| dann | then | Dann rufe ich dich an. |
| danach | after that | Danach sind wir nach Hause gegangen. |
⚠️ Deshalb ich komme nicht. ❌ — two elements before the verb. Deshalb komme ich nicht. ✅
★ The pair to hold on to:weilsends the verb last;deshalbkeeps it second.Ich komme nicht, weil ich krank bin. = Ich bin krank, deshalb komme ich nicht.Same meaning, opposite machinery.
Sequencing a story
zuerst (first) → dann (then) → danach (after that) → später (later) → am Ende / schließlich (in the end)
Zuerst bin ich aufgestanden, dann habe ich gefrühstückt, danach bin ich zur Arbeit gefahren. Später habe ich Max getroffen. Am Ende sind wir ins Kino gegangen.
★ Read that aloud. Five sentences, all past tense, all V2 after a fronted adverb. That paragraph is what Day 29 and Day 30 are going to ask you for.
3. Reacting — so you are not silent while listening
German conversations expect noise back. Silence reads as incomprehension.
| Ach so! | Oh I see! ★ the most useful of all |
|---|---|
| Genau. | Exactly |
| Stimmt. | True / that's right |
| Klar! / Na klar! | Of course! |
| Echt? / Wirklich? | Really? |
| Im Ernst? | Seriously? |
| Kein Wunder. | No wonder |
| Schade! | What a shame! |
| Wie schön! | How lovely! |
| Das stimmt nicht. | That's not right |
| Ja, genau! | Yes, exactly! |
★ Ach so! is the single highest-value word left in this course. It means "ah, now I understand" and it does three jobs at once: it shows you followed, it ends the explanation gracefully, and it buys you a second to think. Use it today.4. Buying time — instead of switching to English
The moment you go silent, the other person switches to English and your practice is over. Fill the gap in German instead.
| Also … | So … (the universal opener) |
|---|---|
| Na ja … | Well … |
| Moment mal. | Just a moment |
| Lass mich überlegen. | Let me think |
| Wie sagt man das auf Deutsch? | How do you say that in German? |
| Ich weiß nicht, wie ich das sagen soll. | I don't know how to say this |
| Wie heißt das noch mal? | What's it called again? |
| eigentlich | actually |
| übrigens | by the way |
| weißt du | you know |
★ Also … at the start of a sentence is free thinking time, exactly like English "So…". It is not filler to be embarrassed about; native speakers use it constantly.
⚠️ This section is the difference between a five-minute conversation and a ninety-second one. Silence ends conversations. Also… na ja… Moment mal… keeps them alive while your brain catches up.
5. Dialogue — the same content, twice
Version A — everything correct, nothing natural
Anna: Was machst du heute?Alex: Ich weiß nicht. Ich habe keine Zeit.Anna: Komm mit. Wir gehen ins Kino.Alex: Ich bin müde. Ich komme nicht.Anna: Gut.
Version B — the same sentences, with today's words
Anna: Sag mal, was machst du denn heute?Alex: Also… ich weiß noch nicht. Ich habe eigentlich keine Zeit.Anna: Komm doch mit! Wir gehen ins Kino.Alex: Na ja… ich bin ziemlich müde. Ich war ja gestern bis spät unterwegs.Anna: Ach so! Kein Wunder.Alex: Aber weißt du was — trotzdem komme ich mit. Wann denn?Anna: Um acht. Ich hole dich ab.Alex: Super. Dann bis später!Anna: Bis dann!
★ Version B contains no grammar you did not have on Day 27. Every difference is a particle, a filler, or a reaction. That is the whole gap between correct German and real German, and you just closed it.
