Day 29: Conversation day

no new material — thirty minutes of talking · 30 min, all out loud

Nothing new today. Close the grammar.

Twenty-eight days of input need one day of pure output before the test. Today is five scenarios and a warm-up, and the only rule is that you say all of it out loud. Reading today silently is the same as skipping it.

⚠️ And you are not allowed to switch to English. Not once. When you get stuck, use section 4 — that is what it is for.

1. How today works

★ Fluency is not knowing more. It is being willing to continue while you are wrong.Today trains exactly that.

2. Warm-up — twenty questions, fast

Answer each in a full sentence, out loud, without pausing. Aim for under three minutes for all twenty. Speed matters more than accuracy here.

⚠️ If you hesitated on 16 or 20, that is the past tense. Do those two again before you move on — they are the two questions you are most likely to be asked in real life.

3. Five scenarios

Use the Role-play mission for each. Numbers in brackets are minimum turns.

① Arriving — a stranger at the station (6 turns, Sie)

You have just arrived in a German city and need to reach your hotel.

• Ask how to get to the hotel · fail to understand · ask for it slower
• Repeat it back and confirm — Also: …, richtig?
• Ask how far it is, and whether you should walk or take the bus
• Thank them

★ Required: Entschuldigung · Wie bitte? · Also: …, richtig? · zum/zur · zu Fuß

② Small talk — meeting someone at a party (8 turns, du)

• Introduce yourself, ask theirs
• Where from, where living, how long (seit + present!)
• Job, family
• What you both like doing — use gern, lieber, Lieblings-
• Ask what they did at the weekend, and answer when asked back (past tense)

★ Required: seit … wohne ich · gern · Was hast du am Wochenende gemacht?

③ Ordering and paying — a restaurant (8 turns, Sie)

• Table for two, menu
• Order drinks and food — at least one masculine noun, so einen
• Say one thing you don't eat
• Ask what they recommend
• Ask to pay, answer Getrennt oder zusammen?, round up with Stimmt so

★ Required: Ich hätte gern einen … · Ich esse kein … · Getrennt, bitte. · Stimmt so.

④ Making plans — and turning something down (8 turns, du)

• A friend invites you out with Hast du Lust …?
• Say no with a reason — a full weil clause, verb at the end
• Say what you have to do instead (müssen) and what you want to do (möchten)
• Propose a different day, agree a time, arrange who picks up whom (abholen, anrufen)

★ Required: Hast du Lust? · weil … + verb last · Ich muss … · Ich hole dich ab.

⑤ Something went wrong (6 turns, either)

Pick one: you missed the train · you're ill · you're lost · you lost your phone.

• Explain what happened (past tense)
• Say how you feel (Mir ist … / Ich bin …)
• Ask for help — Können Sie mir helfen? / Könnten Sie …?
• Say what you'll do now

★ Required: the past tense, a weil clause, and one dative feeling.

4. ★★ The ten phrases that keep a conversation alive

Say these ten out loud right now, twice each. They are worth more than any grammar in this course, because they are what stops the other person switching to English.

★ A learner who uses these has conversations. A learner who goes silent has lessons.That is the entire difference at this level, and it is not about vocabulary.

5. Three minutes, unprepared

Pick one at random — do not choose the easy one — and talk for three minutes without notes. Record it.

1. Mein Tag — your day from waking to sleeping (separable verbs, times)
2. Meine Familie — everyone, where they live, what they do (possessives)
3. Meine Stadt — where things are, how you get around (dative, prepositions)
4. Letztes Wochenende — what you did (past tense — the hard one)
5. Warum ich Deutsch lerne — and what you'll do with it (weil, modals)

⚠️ If you dry up, do not stop. Use Also… na ja… Moment mal… and keep the clock running. Filling three minutes badly beats ninety perfect seconds — tomorrow's test is five minutes.

6. What broke? — diagnose before tomorrow

Listen back to one recording and tick honestly:

★ Wrong articles are the cheapest error in German and the one learners waste the most worry on. Nobody has ever been misunderstood because of die Tisch. Do not spend tonight on gender. Spend it on section 4 and on the past tense.

• ☐Find your Day 1 recording — the eight sentences from Day 1 §9. Tomorrow you read

the exact same ones again, and the two files side by side are the point of all thirty days

• ☐Have your Day 7 / 14 / 21 numbers to hand
• ☐Block 45 minutes. Day 30 is longer than a normal day
• ☐Sleep. It is a speaking test, and tiredness costs more than revision gains

★ You have twenty-nine days behind you. Tomorrow is not about learning anything new — it is about finding out how far you actually came.
