Day 11: 을/를 and the sentence frame
You have had subjects (Day 5) and verbs (Day 6). Today you get objects, and with them the complete Korean sentence frame.
After today you can build any simple sentence you want. The work is not the particle — it is one syllable — it is rewiring the order, and section 3 is a drill, not an explanation. Do it out loud.
1. 을 / 를
### Batchim → 을 · Vowel → 를
| Noun | ||
|---|---|---|
| 밥 (rice) | batchim | 밥을 |
| 책 (book) | batchim | 책을 |
| 커피 | vowel | 커피를 |
| 영화 (film) | vowel | 영화를 |
| 한국어 | vowel | 한국어를 |
★ Same batchim logic as every particle so far — 이/가, 은/는, 이에요/예요. One rule, four uses. By now this should be automatic.
2. ★★ The frame
### 저는 ── 을/를 ── 해요### Topic — Object — VERB
| 저는 | 커피를 | 마셔요. |
|---|---|---|
| 저는 | 밥을 | 먹어요. |
| 저는 | 한국어를 | 공부해요. |
| 저는 | 영화를 | 봐요. |
| 저는 | 친구를 | 만나요. |
| 저는 | 책을 | 읽어요. |
⚠️ The verb is the last word. Nothing goes after it — ever. Not the object, not a time, not a place. If something ended up after your verb, the sentence is wrong.
Verbs that take 을/를
먹다 · 마시다 · 보다 · 읽다 · 쓰다 · 배우다 · 만나다 · 사다 · 하다 · 타다 · 좋아하다
⚠️ 만나다 takes 을/를 — 친구를 만나요, not "meet with". (친구하고 만나요 is also correct and means the same; 친구를 is the plain version.)⚠️ 타다 (ride, get on) takes 을/를 — 버스를 타요, where English says "get on".
3. ★★ The drill — move the verb to the end
This is today's real work. Read each English sentence, then say the Korean out loud without looking at the answer first.
### Order: TIME → PLACE → OBJECT → VERB
| English | Korean |
|---|---|
| I drink coffee. | 저는 커피를 마셔요. |
| I drink coffee every day. | 저는 매일 커피를 마셔요. |
| I drink coffee at 7. | 저는 일곱 시에 커피를 마셔요. |
| I drink coffee at a café at 7. | 저는 일곱 시에 카페에서 커피를 마셔요. |
| I meet a friend at a café at 7 tomorrow. | 저는 내일 일곱 시에 카페에서 친구를 만나요. |
★ Notice what happened: English builds outward from the verb; Korean builds inward toward it. English says drink → coffee → at a café → at 7 → tomorrow. Korean reverses the whole tail and puts the verb last.
★ The habit to build: decide your verb first, then say everything else, then say the verb. It feels like holding your breath for a week. Then it stops.
⚠️ The middle can shuffle — 카페에서 일곱 시에 is also fine — because the particles mark the roles, exactly as Day 5 §1 said. Only the verb's position is fixed.
(에서 = "at, in" for where an action happens. Day 15 covers it properly; today just copy the pattern.)
4. ⚠️ 는 or 를? — the mix-up that changes the meaning
Both attach to nouns. They do completely different jobs.
| 은/는 | topic — what the sentence is about | 저는 |
|---|---|---|
| 을/를 | object — what the verb acts on | 커피를 |
저는 커피를 마셔요. ✅ — as for me, coffee, drink저를 커피는 마셔요.❌ — "coffee drinks me", roughly
★ The two almost always appear together, one on each noun, and they are never interchangeable. Your subject/topic takes 은/는 or 이/가. Your object takes 을/를.
⚠️ You can put 은/는 on an object for contrast, and this is correct Korean:
커피는 마셔요. — I do drink coffee (…tea, no)The 를 is replaced, not added — never 커피를는.
5. ★ And in speech, people drop it
| Written / careful | Spoken |
|---|---|
| 밥을 먹었어요? | ★ 밥 먹었어요? |
| 커피를 마셔요. | 커피 마셔요. |
| 영화를 봐요. | 영화 봐요. |
★ Dropping 을/를 is completely normal, especially with short common nouns and everyday verbs. 밥 먹었어요? (have you eaten?) is one of the most common sentences in Korean and almost nobody says the 을.
⚠️ So why learn it? Three reasons: ① it is required in longer sentences where the roles are not obvious, ② it is always there in writing, and ③ ★ you cannot drop what you cannot place — learners who never learned it also use 는 where 를 belongs, and that is heard as an error.
★ The rule for now: say it while you are learning, drop it once it is automatic.
6. ⚠️ Three verbs that do NOT take 을/를
English gives these objects. Korean does not:
| Takes | ||
|---|---|---|
| 있어요 / 없어요 | ★ 이/가 | 시간이 있어요 — I have time |
| 좋아요 | ★ 이/가 | 커피가 좋아요 — I like coffee (Day 13) |
| 아니에요 | ★ 이/가 | 학생이 아니에요 |
⚠️ 좋아하다 (to like) DOES take 을/를 — 커피를 좋아해요 — while 좋다 takes 이/가. Two verbs, one meaning, different particles. Day 13 is entirely about that pair.
7. Dialogue
★ Three things.① 저는 오후에 한국어를 공부해요 — time → object → verb, exactly §3.② 같이 커피 마셔요 — ★ the 를 is dropped, and that is normal speech.③ 커피를 좋아해요 but 일이 끝나요 — different verbs, different particles.
