Day 14: Week 2 Review
Halfway. Today has a second job: compare your numbers with Day 7. The direction they moved tells you more than any exercise here.
Tests first, summary after.
1. Week 2 on one page
Numbers (Day 8)
Sino 일 이 삼 사 오 육 칠 팔 구 십 · 백 · 천 · ★ 만 Native 하나 둘 셋 넷 다섯 여섯 일곱 여덟 아홉 열 · 스물 서른 마흔 쉰 ★ Sino = money, dates, minutes, phone numbers · ★ Native = age, hours, counting things ★ 세 시 삼십 분 — native hour, Sino minute, one breath ⚠️ Group by 만 — 1,000,000 = 백만 ⚠️ Before a counter: 하나→한 · 둘→두 · 셋→세 · 넷→네 · 스물→스무 Counters: 개 · 명 · 분(polite) · 잔 · 병 · 마리 · 권 · 장 · 번 · 살
Time and dates (Day 9)
시 native · 분 Sino · 반 = half · 오전/오후 goes first ★ 새벽 = the small hours — 새벽 두 시 = 2 am 요일: 월 화 수 목 금 토 일 · ★ dates run 년 → 월 → 일 ⚠️ 유월 (6월) · 시월 (10월) ★ 에 on clock times, days, months — ⚠️ never on 오늘·내일·어제·지금·언제·매일 ★ 시 (o'clock) vs 시간 (hours)
Family (Day 10)
★ A man says 형/누나 · a woman says 오빠/언니 · 동생 for younger ★ These extend to friends and colleagues — which is why age comes up immediately ★ 우리 엄마, 우리 집, 우리 나라 — 우리 where English says "my" ★ No verb "to have" — 형이 있어요 / 없어요, with 이/가 Honorifics to recognise: 계세요 · 드세요 · 주무세요
★★ 을/를 and the frame (Day 11)
TIME → PLACE → OBJECT → VERB
batchim → 을 · vowel → 를 저는 매일 카페에서 커피를 마셔요. ⚠️ 은/는 = topic · 을/를 = object — never swapped ★ Dropped constantly in speech: 밥 먹었어요? ⚠️ 있어요·좋아요·아니에요 take 이/가, not 을/를
Ordering (Day 12)
★ 주세요 — with a noun (물 주세요) and with a verb (다시 말해 주세요) ★ 이거 주세요 — point and order, works everywhere 저기요! · 반찬 더 주세요 (free, refillable) · 계산해 주세요 ★ 잘 먹겠습니다 (before) / 잘 먹었습니다 (after) · ⚠️ no tipping
Likes (Day 13)
★ 커피가 좋아요 (이/가) vs 커피를 좋아해요 (을/를) 잘해요 / 못해요 / 잘 못해요 · ⚠️ 별로·전혀 need a negative verb 제일 / 가장 = the most
The four things English speakers get wrong
- Wrong number system — 삼 시 instead of 세 시
- 에 on 오늘/내일/지금
- Verb not last, or something after it
- Particle mismatched to the verb — 커피를 좋아요
2. ✍️ Dictation — 20 sentences
Hangul only. No romanisation.
Scoring
| 18–20 | Ahead of schedule |
|---|---|
| 14–17 | Normal at the halfway mark |
| 10–13 | Check the type: numbers → Day 8 · particles → Day 11 · batchim → Day 2 |
| under 10 | Redo Days 8 and 11 before Day 15 |
⚠️ Compare to Day 7. A lower score is normal — these sentences are twice as long and full of particles. What matters is the error type: alphabet errors should be gone, particle errors are expected.
3. 🗣 Speaking test — two minutes
One take, no notes. Twice as long as Day 7.
The checklist
- greeting, name, country, job, age
- your family — how many, who, what they do (the right sibling words!)
- 우리 used at least once
- three sentences with an object — 을/를, verb last
- a time and a day — with 에
- two things you like — one with 좋아요, one with 좋아해요
- one thing you don't really like — 별로 안
- one thing you're not good at — 잘 못해요
- a question back

|---|---|---|
| Sino vs native | rule gap | Day 8 §3 |
| 만 grouping | ⚠️ costs you money | Day 8 §2 |
| 한/두/세/네/스무 | detail gap | Day 8 §4 |
| 에 on 오늘/내일 | ⚠️ long-lived error | Day 9 §6 |

| 우리 vs 제 | idiom | Day 10 §3 |
| verb not last | ★ structure | Day 11 §2–3 |
| 을/를 vs 은/는 | ★ the core of week 2 | Day 11 §4 |
| 좋아요 vs 좋아해요 | particle match | Day 13 §1 |
| 별로 without a negative | rule gap | Day 13 §4 |
★ The halfway honest assessment
What you can do now: read anything, introduce yourself and your family fully, handle numbers, money, times and dates, order and pay a full meal, and say what you like, prefer and are bad at. That is a functioning tourist and a functioning first conversation.
What is missing is one thing: the past. You cannot yet say what you did — which means every conversation is stuck in today. Day 26 fixes that.
Week 3 is: 에/에서 (15), 있어요 and directions (16), transport (17), shopping (18), want and can (19), have to (20), review (21).
★ Week 3 is easier than week 2. The particle work is behind you; week 3 is mostly new endings on the verbs you already know.
