Day 15: 에 and 에서

the two "at" · 한테 / 에게 · 부터 · 까지 · the verb decides · 30 min

Korean has two particles for "at / in / to", and choosing wrongly is the most audible particle error a learner makes.

학교에 가요. — I go to school. 학교에 있어요. — I am at school. 학교에서 공부해요. — I study at school.

Same place, three sentences, two different particles. ★ And the rule is not about the place — it is about the verb.

1. ★★ The rule

### 에 — destination, or static location. Used with 가다·오다·있다·없다.### 에서 — where an ACTION happens, or where you came FROM.
ParticleVerb
학교 가요.going somewhere
와요.coming somewhere
학교 있어요.★ existing somewhere
없어요.not existing somewhere
학교에서 공부해요.에서doing something
카페에서 커피를 마셔요.에서doing something
한국에서 왔어요.에서coming from

The test is one question: does something happen there, or am I just there? Studying, eating, working, meeting → 에서. Being, going, arriving → .

⚠️ The two errors, and they are the classic ones:

학교에서 가요학교 가요going is not an action at the school
학교 공부해요학교에서 공부해요studying is
한국 왔어요 (meaning "from")한국에서 왔어요에 would mean "came to Korea"
한국에 왔어요 and 한국에서 왔어요 are both correct sentences with opposite meaningscame to Korea vs came from Korea. This pair is worth saying out loud until the difference is physical.

And 에 does time too

You met this on Day 9: 세 시에, 월요일에, 유월에.Same particle, and the logic is the same — a point you are at, not an action.

⚠️ Still no 에 on 오늘 · 내일 · 어제 · 지금 · 언제 · 매일.

2. ★ 한테 and 에게 — "to a person"

에 is for places. People take a different particle.

Register
한테spoken, everyday
에게written, formal
honorific — to someone senior
친구한테 줘요.I give it to a friend
친구한테 말해요.I tell a friend
엄마한테 전화해요.I call my mum
선생님 드려요.I give it to the teacher (honorific)

⚠️ Never use 에 with a person. 친구에 줘요 is wrong in a way that stands out — 에 is strictly for places and times.

And "from a person"

친구한테서 받았어요.I received it from a friend
★ 친구한테 받았어요.(the 서 is usually dropped in speech)

3. ★ 부터 and 까지 — from and until

부터from (time)아홉 시부터
까지until, to여섯 시까지 · 서울까지
에서from (place)서울에서
아홉 시부터 여섯 시까지 일해요. — I work from nine to six.서울에서 부산까지 가요. — I go from Seoul to Busan.월요일부터 금요일까지 학교에 가요. — Monday to Friday.

The pattern is symmetrical: time takes 부터…까지, place takes 에서…까지.

⚠️ 까지 also means "by" a deadline다섯 시까지 오세요 (come by five). Context separates "until" from "by", and Koreans do not find it ambiguous.

4. ★ 도 — "also", and it replaces the particle

means too, also, even — and it takes the place of 은/는, 이/가 and 을/를:

학생이에요.I'm a student too (not 저는도)
커피 마셔요.I drink coffee too (not 커피를도)
저는 김치 좋아해요.I like kimchi as well

⚠️ But it stacks on top of place particles — 학교에서도 공부해요 (I study at school too), 집에도 있어요. Grammar particles get replaced; place particles do not.

저도 is one of the most useful two-syllable words in Korean. — 저는 커피 좋아해요.저도!

5. Dialogue

★ Every contrast in one conversation.카페에 있어요 (being) vs 여기에서 공부해요 (doing).집에 가요 (destination) vs 회사에서 와요 (origin).아홉 시부터 … 여섯 시까지 — the time pair.저도 twice, replacing the particle. And 저한테 전화해 주세요 — a person, so 한테, plus Day 12's 주세요.
