Day 21: Week 3 Review

everything from Days 15–20, tested · the endings week · 45 min

Week 3 was six new endings and two new particles. Everything after today is consolidation plus the past tense.

Tests first. Fill in the numbers table in section 7 — you now have three data points.

1. Week 3 on one page

★★ 에 vs 에서 (Day 15)

에 = destination or static location (가다·오다·있다·없다)에서 = where an action happens, or where you came from

학교 가요 / 학교 있어요 / 학교에서 공부해요 ⚠️ 한국에 왔어요 (came TO)한국에서 왔어요 (came FROM) People: ★ 한테 (spoken) · 에게 (written) · (honorific) — ⚠️ never 에 부터 … 까지 (time) · 에서 … 까지 (place) replaces 은/는·이/가·을/를 — 저도

Position and directions (Day 16)

[noun] + [position] + 에 — 책상 위에, 은행 앞에

위 · 아래/밑 · 앞 · 뒤 · 옆 · 안 · 밖 · 사이 · 건너편 · 근처 이/그/저 — a three-way split · 여기/거기/저기 ★ -(으)세요 — vowel → 세요, batchim → 으세요 · 앉으세요, 가세요, 하세요 화장실이 어디예요? · 얼마나 걸려요? · 똑바로 / 오른쪽으로 / 왼쪽으로

Transport (Day 17)

버스를 타요 (을/를!) · 여기에서 내려요 (에서) · 갈아타요(으)로 — by means of (버스로) and toward (오른쪽으로) ⚠️ 걸어서 가요, not 발로 몇 번 출구예요? · 여기로 가 주세요 · 여기에서 세워 주세요 · ~쯤

Shopping (Day 18)

adjective + 거 — 큰 거 · 작은 거 · 싼 거 · 다른 거 · 안 매운 거 더 큰 거 있어요? · 다른 색 있어요? · 입어 봐도 돼요? · 이걸로 주세요 · 그냥 볼게요 ⚠️ 깎아 주세요 — markets only

★★ The six endings (Days 19–20)

-고 싶어요want to — 가고 싶어요 ⚠️ verbs only
-(으)ㄹ 수 있어요can — 갈 수 있어요 · ★ 못 가요 is commoner
-(으)ㄹ까요?shall we? — 갈까요?
-(으)ㄹ게요I'll — 갈게요 ⚠️ first person only
-아/어야 돼요have to — 가야 돼요
-아/어도 돼요may — 가도 돼요
-(으)면 안 돼요must not — 가면 안 돼요
All of them build off the 해요 form. That is why Day 6 was the hub.

⚠️ 안 가도 돼요 (don't have to)가면 안 돼요 (must not)

2. ✍️ Dictation — 20 sentences

Scoring

18–20Week 3 landed
14–17Normal
10–13Check: 에/에서 → Day 15 · endings → Days 19–20
under 10One extra day on Days 15 and 19 before Day 22

⚠️ The specific thing to look for: did you write the whole ending? Sentences 16–20 all end in a multi-syllable ending, and dropping the last syllable is the classic week-3 failure.

3. 🗣 Speaking test — three minutes

One take. Half again as long as Day 14.

The checklist

  • everything from Day 14 (name, family, likes, job)
  • where you are and what you do there — 에 and 에서, correctly split
  • how you get to work or school — 타다 with 을/를
  • two places by position — 앞에, 옆에, 근처에
  • two things you want to do — 고 싶어요
  • one thing you can't do — 못
  • one thing you have to do — 야 돼요
  • one thing you're not allowed to do — 면 안 돼요
  • one proposal — ㄹ까요?
  • a question back

Model answer (~2 min 50)

Compare with Day 14. The sentences now have endings — want, can't, have to, must not, shall we. That is the whole difference, and it is what makes speech sound like a person rather than a phrasebook.

4. 🎭 Role-play — a day out, ten turns

Scene: a visitor's day in Seoul. Ten exchanges, no English.

  1. Ask a stranger where the subway station is (-(으)세요 answer expected)
  2. Fail to understand — ask for it slowly
  3. Repeat it back and confirm — 맞아요?
  4. Ask which line, where to change, which exit
  5. In a shop: ask the price, ask for a bigger one and another colour
  6. Ask if you may try it on
  7. Buy it, ask about card, ask for a bag
  8. Say what you want to do this evening
  9. Say what you have to do instead
  10. Propose a different day — -(으)ㄹ까요?

★ Where you are at day 21

You can now: get anywhere by asking strangers, use the subway and taxis, shop for anything without knowing its name, order and pay a full meal, and say what you want, can, have to, may and must not do. That is a functioning adult in Korean.

What is missing is exactly one thing: the past. Every conversation is still stuck in today. Day 26 fixes it, and it is the last big grammar day.

Week 4: irregular verbs (22), 안 vs 못 (23), question words (24), the future (25), the past (26), adjectives (27), connecting sentences (28), conversation (29), final challenge (30).

Nothing in week 4 is as hard as Day 5 or Day 15. The expensive part is done.
