Day 22: The irregular verbs

ㅂ · ㄷ · 르 · ㅅ · ㅡ · ㄹ — six patterns · ★ you already use most of them · 30 min

Korean has six irregular patterns, and that is the entire list. There is no long tail of one-off exceptions the way European languages have.

And you have been using them correctly for three weeks without knowing: 몰라요 · 매워요 · 들어요 · 써요 · 바빠요 are all irregular. Today names the patterns so you can produce new verbs instead of only the ones you memorised.

⚠️ All six are triggered by the same thing: a vowel ending arriving after the stem. That is why they show up in 아요/어요 and disappear in 고 싶어요.

1. ★ ㅂ irregular — the biggest group

### ㅂ → 우, then + 어요 = 워요
Dictionary해요 form
더워요it's hot
추워요it's cold
매워요it's spicy ★ (Day 12)
쉬워요it's easy
어렵어려워요it's difficult
가깝가까워요it's close ★ (Day 16)
무겁무거워요it's heavy
아름답아름다워요it's beautiful
고맙고마워요thank you ★ (Day 3)

⚠️ Not every ㅂ verb is irregular. These stay regular: 입다 → 입어요 (wear), 잡다 → 잡아요 (catch), 좁다 → 좁아요 (narrow).

The rule of thumb: most ㅂ descriptive verbs are irregular, most ㅂ action verbs are regular. 덥다, 춥다, 맵다, 쉽다 describe. 입다, 잡다 act.

And it only changes before a vowel:(vowel ending) · 덥 (consonant ending — unchanged) · 덥지만

2. ★ ㄷ irregular — ㄷ becomes ㄹ

### ㄷ → ㄹ before a vowel
Dictionary해요 form
들어요to listen ★ (Day 6)
걸어요to walk
물어요to ask

⚠️ Regular ㄷ verbs: 받다 → 받아요 (receive), 닫다 → 닫아요 (close), 믿다 → 믿어요 (believe).

음악을 들어요. — I listen to music.많이 걸었어요. — I walked a lot.

3. ★ 르 irregular — 르 doubles the ㄹ

### 르 + 어요 → ㄹ라요 / ㄹ러요
Dictionary해요 form
모르몰라요don't know (Day 1!)
빠르빨라요it's fast
다르달라요it's different
부르불러요to call, to sing
고르골라요to choose

The ㄹ doubles: one stays behind as a batchim, one goes forward. 모르 → 몰아요 → 몰라요.

⚠️ Which vowel? The same 아/어 rule as always — 모르 has ㅗ → 몰라요; 부르 has ㅜ → 불러요.

4. ★ ㅡ deletion — the vowel just drops

### A stem ending in ㅡ loses it, and takes the vowel from the syllable before.
Dictionary해요 form
써요to write, to use ★ (Day 6)
커요it's big
바쁘바빠요I'm busy ★
예쁘예뻐요it's pretty
아프아파요it hurts
배고프배고파요I'm hungry ★ (Day 12)

How to pick the vowel: look at the syllable before the ㅡ. 바으 → the previous vowel is 바빠요. 예으 → 예뻐요. If there is no previous syllable (쓰다, 크다), it defaults to → 써요, 커요.

5. ★ ㅅ and ㄹ

ㅅ irregular — the ㅅ vanishes

나아요to get better (illness)
지어요to build

⚠️ Regular: 웃다 → 웃어요 (laugh), 씻다 → 씻어요 (wash), 벗다 → 벗어요.

ㄹ deletion — before ㅅ, ㄴ, ㅂ

ㄹ-final stems keep their ㄹ before a vowel but lose it before ㅅ, ㄴ and ㅂ:

해요-(으)세요-ㅂ니다
살아요사세요삽니다
만들만들어요만드세요만듭니다
알아요아세요압니다
You have already met this: 아세요? (do you know?) and 어디 사세요?(where do you live?) are 알다 and 살다 with the ㄹ gone.

⚠️ And ㄹ stems never take the 으 — 살다 → 사세요, not 살으세요; 살 수 있어요, not 살을 수 있어요.

6. ★ The whole set, one page

PatternTriggerExample
vowel ending덥다 → 더워요
vowel ending듣다 → 들어요
아/어 ending모르다 → 몰라요
아/어 ending바쁘다 → 바빠요
vowel ending낫다 → 나아요
★ ㅅ, ㄴ, ㅂ ending살다 → 사세요

Five of the six happen only before a vowel. So the irregularity shows up in 아요/어요, 았/었어요, 아/어서 — and disappears before -고, -지만, -겠-:

· 모르 · 살 — all regular.
