Day 9: Time and dates
Yesterday's two number systems meet here, every day, in every sentence about time.
Three things today will catch you: Korean dates run big-to-small (year, month, day — the opposite of English), two months are irregular, and the time particle 에 has a list of words it must not attach to (section 6). That last one is the error learners keep making at intermediate level.
1. The clock — native hour, Sino minute
| 지금 몇 시예요? | What time is it now? |
|---|---|
| 몇 시에 가요? | What time are you going? |
### 시 = native number · 분 = Sino number
| 1:00 | 한 시 | |
|---|---|---|
| 2:00 | 두 시 | |
| 3:30 | 세 시 삼십 분 | |
| 3:30 | ★ 세 시 반 | 반 = half — what people actually say |
| 7:15 | 일곱 시 십오 분 | |
| 12:00 | 열두 시 |
⚠️ Only twelve hour-words exist — 한 시 to 열두 시. Native numbers are used because you never count past twelve.
오전 / 오후 — and they go FIRST
| 오전 아홉 시 | 9 am |
|---|---|
| 오후 세 시 | 3 pm |
⚠️ The am/pm word comes before the time, unlike English. 오후 세 시, never 세 시 오후.
★ Timetables and announcements use the 24-hour clock (십사 시 삼십 분), but people speaking do not. In conversation it is 오전/오후 plus a twelve-hour clock.
2. ★ Parts of the day — including one English lacks
| 아침 | morning | also breakfast |
|---|---|---|
| 점심 | midday | also lunch |
| 저녁 | evening | also dinner |
| 밤 | night | |
| ★ 새벽 | the small hours — roughly 1 am to sunrise | |
| 낮 | daytime |
★ 새벽 is a genuinely useful word with no clean English equivalent. 새벽 두 시 is 2 am — and Koreans say it constantly, because 밤 covers the evening-night and 새벽 covers the after-midnight stretch. "I got home at 2 in the morning" is 새벽 두 시에 집에 왔어요, never 아침 두 시.
★ Note that 아침 · 점심 · 저녁 each mean both a time of day and the meal eaten then.아침 먹어요 = I'm having breakfast. One word, two jobs.
3. Days of the week
| Element | ||
|---|---|---|
| 월요일 | Monday | 月 moon |
| 화요일 | Tuesday | 火 fire |
| 수요일 | Wednesday | 水 water |
| 목요일 | Thursday | 木 wood |
| 금요일 | Friday | 金 gold |
| 토요일 | Saturday | 土 earth |
| 일요일 | Sunday | 日 sun |
★ 요일 means "day of the week", and the first syllable is one of the five elements plus sun and moon. Japanese uses the identical set, so if you have any Japanese these are free. Monday = moon-day matches English exactly, and Sunday = sun-day does too.
| 무슨 요일이에요? | What day is it? |
|---|---|
| 오늘은 월요일이에요. | Today is Monday |
| 주말 | weekend · 평일 weekday |
4. ★★ Dates — big to small, all Sino
### 년 → 월 → 일. Year, month, day. The opposite of English.
2026년 8월 24일 — 이천이십육 년 팔 월 이십사 일
| 몇 월 며칠이에요? | What's the date? |
|---|---|
| 팔 월 이십사 일이에요. | It's 24 August |
| 생일이 언제예요? | When's your birthday? |
| 오 월 팔 일이에요. | 8 May |
★ Korean puts the big container first, everywhere — 2026년 8월 24일, and an address runs country → city → district → street → building. English does the reverse in both cases. Once you notice the pattern, dates stop needing a rule.
⚠️ Two irregular months
| Written | Said | |
|---|---|---|
| June | 6월 | ★ 유월 (not 육월) |
| October | 10월 | ★ 시월 (not 십월) |
All the others are regular: 일월 이월 삼월 사월 오월 유월 칠월 팔월 구월 시월 십일월 십이월.
★ The reason is pure ease of saying — 육월 and 십월 are awkward, so the final consonant dropped centuries ago. Nothing else in the calendar is irregular.
5. When — today, tomorrow, this week
| 그저께 | the day before yesterday | |
|---|---|---|
| 어제 | yesterday | |
| 오늘 | today | |
| 내일 | tomorrow | |
| 모레 | the day after tomorrow | |
| 지난주 | last week | 지난달 last month |
| 이번 주 | this week | 이번 달 this month |
| 다음 주 | next week | 다음 달 next month |
| 지금 | now | 나중에 later |
| 매일 | every day | 매주 every week · 매년 every year |
| 항상 / 자주 / 가끔 / 전혀 | always / often / sometimes / never |
6. ★★ 에 — the time particle, and when you must not use it
### Attach 에 to a clock time, a day, a month or a date.
| 세 시에 가요. | I'm going at three |
|---|---|
| 월요일에 만나요. | Let's meet on Monday |
| 오 월에 가요. | I'm going in May |
| 주말에 뭐 해요? | What are you doing at the weekend? |
⚠️ But NOT with these
### 오늘 · 내일 · 어제 · 지금 · 언제 · 매일 — no 에. Ever.
| ✅ | ❌ |
|---|---|
| 오늘 가요. | |
| 내일 만나요. | |
| 지금 가요. | |
| 언제 가요? | |
| 매일 공부해요. |
★ The pattern: words that already mean "at that time" refuse the particle. 오늘 does not mean "today" the noun — it means "on today". There is nothing left for 에 to add.
⚠️ This is a long-lived error. Learners apply 에 to everything time-shaped for years. Learn the six-word blacklist now — 오늘 내일 어제 지금 언제 매일 — and you will be ahead of people two levels above you.
★ And 시 vs 시간
| 시 | o'clock — a point | 두 시 = 2 o'clock |
|---|---|---|
| 시간 | hours — a duration | 두 시간 = 2 hours |
두 시에 두 시간 공부해요. — I study for two hours at two o'clock.⚠️ Both native numbers, one letter of difference, completely different meanings.Same for 분 (minutes, both point and duration) and 일 (day) vs 일주일 (a week).
7. Dialogue
★ Track the particles: 저녁에, 일곱 시에, 금요일 일곱 시에 — all take 에.But 오늘 and 내일 take nothing. And both irregular months appear: 유월, 시월.
